Daisuke Gōri was a Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator born Yoshio Nagahori on February 8, 1952, in Kōtō, Tokyo. Throughout his career, he was affiliated with several agencies, including TV Talent Center Tokyo, Yoshizawa Theatre School, and Mausu Promotion, before joining Aoni Production, where he remained at the time of his death in 2010. He was active in the entertainment industry from 1973 until his passing. Gōri was renowned for his exceptionally deep and booming voice, a distinct quality that made him a popular choice for a wide range of characters, including imposing villains, powerful father figures, and comedic roles.
Gōri’s career is marked by an extensive list of prominent roles across many of Japan’s most famous anime franchises. In the Dragon Ball series, he was particularly prolific, voicing multiple characters such as the grandiose and comedic Mr. Satan, the wise Turtle (Umigame), the Ox-King (Gyūmaō), the ruler of Other World King Enma, and the villainous King Cold, among many others. His work in the Gundam franchise was also significant, where he provided the voices for the imposing Dozle Zabi in the original Mobile Suit Gundam and the ruthless Bask Om in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
His versatility extended to a vast number of other classic series. In Kinnikuman, he was the voice of the noble warrior Robin Mask. He played the role of Hiromi Yamazaki in the Patlabor series and its films. In Fist of the North Star, he voiced characters such as the prison warden Uighur and the pirate captain Akashachi. He also played the role of the demon Gemma Himuro in the acclaimed film Ninja Scroll. Beyond television and film, Gōri was a prominent voice in video games, most famously as Heihachi Mishima in the Tekken series, Bass Armstrong in the Dead or Alive series, and General Pepper in the Star Fox series. His other notable credits include roles in One Piece (as Dorry and Jinbe), Cowboy Bebop (as Fatty River), Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, and the English dub of the film The Iron Giant.
Daisuke Gōri passed away on January 17, 2010, at the age of 57. Following his death, his ongoing roles were inherited by other voice actors, notably Ryūzaburō Ōtomo and Unshō Ishizuka.
