Description
Megalo is a large, plump black cat who serves as the main antagonist of the 1988 Japanese anime series Topo Gigio, itself based on the Italian puppet character. He belongs to Signora Knopp, the wealthiest woman in the town of Catalina, and lives with her in the same building where the mouse Topo Gigio and his friends reside. His physical appearance, with his round shape and dark fur, closely resembles that of Lucifer, the cat from Disney's Cinderella.
In terms of personality, Megalo is agile, dangerous, and highly temperamental. He is cynical, arrogant, selfish, cunning, cruel, aggressive, and clever, yet all of his attempts to capture Topo Gigio ultimately fail. Despite his fierce demeanor, he is forced to act docile, meek, and sycophantic toward his owner, Signora Knopp, whom he secretly dislikes. He resents her because he values his comfortable lifestyle and wants to maintain it, which is why he endures her demands. One of his particular dislikes is the daily walks that Signora Knopp forces him to take.
Megalo's primary motivation is to catch and eliminate Topo Gigio and his mouse friends, a mission that drives much of the conflict in the series. He is also the leader of the cats in the city, commanding a small gang that includes his two stray cat friends, Arro and Braccio. Despite his generally antagonistic role, he shows a degree of loyalty to these two cats, as he is known to steal food from his owner's kitchen to prevent them from having to scavenge in the trash. He also suffers from several notable weaknesses: he has a fear of heights, and he is terrified of vampires, reptiles, and fleas.
His key relationships revolve around his owner and his feline gang. Arro is a plump, orange-striped cat who is intelligent and sycophantic, often flattering Megalo. Braccio is a very thin, green-furred cat who speaks his mind and frequently points out Megalo's flaws, for which he is often punished. There is also Daina, a refined female cat who lives in the villa next door to Signora Knopp and is in love with Megalo. She generally avoids the conflicts involving the mice but will occasionally join the chase. Additionally, in one episode, Signora Knopp brings home a new kitten named Tino, and Megalo fears the newcomer might replace him as the top cat, so he assigns Tino the task of catching Topo Gigio, believing the mice will defeat the small kitten.
Throughout the series, Megalo does not undergo substantial character development; he remains a recurring comic antagonist whose schemes are consistently foiled by Topo Gigio's cleverness and resourcefulness. While the mice often provoke and mock him, some perspectives within the show imply that his hatred is partly fueled by their constant teasing. His notable abilities include his agility and his role as the leader of the local cats, but his recurring failures highlight his ineffectiveness as a villain.
