Description
In the 2011 anime film Tekken: Blood Vengeance, Heihachi Mishima is portrayed as the primary antagonist and the mastermind orchestrating the film's central conflict. Known as the formidable patriarch of the Mishima family, he is the former leader of the powerful Mishima Zaibatsu. At the time the film's story begins, Heihachi is reported to have been killed by his son, Kazuya Mishima, several years prior. However, this proves to be a deception, as he has been operating from the shadows to pursue his own ambitions.
Heihachi's personality in this film is defined by a singular, unyielding drive for power. He is a power-hungry and ruthless individual who displays a complete lack of empathy for others. Unlike some portrayals of the character in the video game series, this version of Heihachi is stripped of any redeeming qualities such as honor or a sense of affability. He is willing to commit heinous acts without remorse, viewing all those around him as mere tools to be used and discarded in his quest for ultimate power.
His primary motivation is the acquisition of the Devil Gene, a powerful and malevolent force that resides within his son Kazuya and his grandson Jin Kazama. Heihachi desires the absolute power that this gene provides and orchestrates the events of the film to extract it. To this end, he conducts cruel experiments, including the M-Cell experiment derived from the Devil Gene, on a class of high school students at Mishima Polytechnic School, where he served as headmaster. The goal of this experiment was to test for immortality, and while most subjects died, the sole survivor was a student named Shin Kamiya, whom Heihachi later hunts down.
In the story's climax, Heihachi reveals his survival and his true intentions. After confronting Shin, Kazuya, Jin, and the other protagonists at an old castle in Kyoto, he kills Shin Kamiya without hesitation when Shin attempts to attack him. He then engages in a brutal three-way battle with his son and grandson. Heihachi demonstrates his physical might by overpowering Kazuya but is eventually bested by Jin, who knocks him from the temple. Undeterred, Heihachi unleashes the spirits of Mokujin, which are the very material the castle is made from, and uses their power to transform into a monstrous creature to continue his assault.
Key relationships in his life are defined by conflict and ambition. His relationship with his son, Kazuya, and his grandson, Jin, is purely adversarial, as he seeks to harvest their power. His treatment of Shin Kamiya shows his utter callousness; he shows no gratitude that Shin survived his experiments, instead telling the young man he should be grateful to be alive. In contrast to his game counterpart, who is genuinely fond of the character Ling Xiaoyu, this Heihachi shows no such affection and attempts to kill her as well.
Heihachi does not undergo any significant personal development or redemption throughout the film, remaining a static and purely antagonistic force. His notable abilities are formidable, making him a powerful fighter even at his advanced age. He is a master of Mishima-ryu karate, a powerful fighting style. His most spectacular ability, however, is his final transformation, which harnesses the spirits of Mokujin to turn him into a giant, powerful monster. This form allows him to battle Jin, who has also transformed, in a final, climactic confrontation. Though this monster is ultimately destroyed by Jin, Heihachi himself is never found, leaving his ultimate fate ambiguous.
