Pepe Mediavilla
Description
Pepe Mediavilla was a highly respected Spanish voice actor and voice director, born José Fernández Mediavilla on 23 April 1940 in Barcelona. He passed away on 19 April 2018 at the age of 77. His career in dubbing spanned more than five decades, during which he became one of the most recognizable voices in Spanish-language media.
Mediavilla's professional journey began in the mid-1960s after he studied at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. He started working at the La Voz de España dubbing studio, where his first major role came in 1967 dubbing actor Jim Brown in the film The Dirty Dozen. For nearly twenty years, he primarily voiced secondary characters, but his work in television series during the 1980s allowed him to take on more leading roles.
In the realm of animation and anime, Mediavilla contributed his voice to several iconic series and films. He is known for voicing the character Rothbart in the anime series Swan Lake [citation:user]. He played the role of Boss in the classic series Mazinger Z, a part for which he had to alter his voice to match the character's rough and youthful nature. This dubbing was done in 1976 for the series' broadcast in Spain. For Tekken: The Motion Picture in 1998, he provided the Spanish voice for the character Heihachi Mishima. In this production, he dubbed over the original Japanese voice of Daisuke Gōri.
Another significant animation role was voicing the villain Dr. Claw in the popular series Inspector Gadget and its sequel, Gadget & the Gadgetinis. He also lent his voice to other animated features, including Emperor Zurg in Toy Story 2, Rasputin in Anastasia, Pacha in The Emperor's New Groove and its sequel, and Kamaji in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away.
Beyond animation, Mediavilla became the regular Spanish dubbing voice for several prominent international actors. He is most famous for dubbing Morgan Freeman in 54 films, including The Shawshank Redemption, Million Dollar Baby, and Invictus. He was also the regular voice for Ian McKellen, most notably as Gandalf in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. His other frequent collaborations included dubbing James Earl Jones in 18 films and Philip Baker Hall in 14 films.
Mediavilla's work extended to live-action television and film as well. He was the Spanish voice of Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, in the original Star Trek series. His extensive filmography includes dubbing actors in major productions like Titanic, The Mummy, and the Rocky films.
In addition to his on-screen work, he was the narrator for several video games, including Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and the Sacred series. His family also had ties to the profession; his daughter, Núria Mediavilla, and son, José Luis Mediavilla, are also voice actors. They even appeared together in the Mazinger Z dub, where his daughter voiced the character Shiro Kabuto.
