Description
Hiromi Yamazaki is a member of Section 2 Division 2 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, serving as the carrier driver for Unit 1. He was born in Ishigaki, Okinawa, into a family of fishermen. While he initially wished to follow his father’s path, he is unable to do so because he easily gets seasick. This led him to join the police force, eventually being assigned to the Special Vehicle section.
Yamazaki is a man of immense stature, standing well over two meters tall, with an appearance that can seem intimidating at first glance. Contrary to his imposing physique, he possesses a very gentle and soft-spoken nature, speaking very little. He has a kind-hearted and almost feminine sensibility, which is reflected in his hobbies and demeanor. His primary role in the team is not as a Labor pilot, as his large frame makes it impossible for him to fit inside a standard cockpit; instead, he is responsible for driving the massive carrier truck that transports Unit 1.
Outside of active duty, Yamazaki dedicates his time to tending the vegetable garden and greenhouse, where he grows tomatoes, and looking after the hen-house at the SV2 barracks. His agricultural and livestock skills, rooted in his upbringing and a deep familiarity with the ecology of marine and farm animals, provide a substantial amount of fresh food for the other officers. He also packs his own beautifully arranged lunch boxes. This gentle and nurturing personality often serves as a calming influence within the platoon, which is known for its volatile members. He frequently mediates conflicts, such as restraining the hot-headed Isao Ohta, and his quiet strength makes him an effective mediator when words are not enough.
Although his size prevents him from piloting a standard Labor, Yamazaki possesses superhuman physical strength. This ability allows him to take on unique combat support roles that no other member can. He is shown firing the AV-98 Ingram's massive revolver cannon while standing on solid ground without the aid of a Labor, an act that would severely injure a normal person. He also single-handedly operates a massive anti-labor rifle, a weapon with enormous recoil, to provide heavy fire support from the rear. In certain situations, he has even been able to pilot a Labor after its cockpit is specially modified to accommodate his size, such as the ARL-99 Helldiver.
Within the team, his key relationships are defined by his quiet support of his louder colleagues. While he often works alongside Unit 1’s commander Asuma Shinohara and pilot Noa Izumi by driving their transport, his role is that of the team’s gentle giant and moral anchor, the one who looks after both the living things at the base and his fellow officers when they are in danger. In iterations such as the theatrical movies, he continues to serve as a heavy weapons operator and driver, remaining a dedicated member of the unit during major incidents.
