Movie
Description
Hiromi Yamazaki is a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police's Section 2 Division 2, specifically assigned to Team 1. Hailing from the island of Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture, his background is rooted in a family of fishermen. Despite this upbringing, his plan to follow his father into the fishing trade was thwarted by a significant personal limitation: he suffers from severe seasickness. This condition ultimately led him to pursue a different path, joining the police force before eventually being assigned to the special vehicle section.

Yamazaki is an extraordinary physical presence, standing over two meters tall, which makes him the largest member of the unit. This imposing stature is the defining fact of his professional role within the team. He is too large to fit inside the cockpit of the AV-98 Ingram, the primary labor used by the division. Consequently, he cannot serve as a pilot and is instead designated as the driver of the labor carrier vehicle, responsible for transporting Unit 1 to incident sites.

His physical strength is as remarkable as his size, a trait that is utilized in critical situations. In the first Patlabor movie and its sequel, Yamazaki operates a massive anti-labor rifle, a weapon usually mounted on vehicles, as a personal firearm to provide heavy fire support from the rear. This immense power is also demonstrated in the television series when he and his colleague Isao Ohta fire an Ingram's revolver cannon by hand, without the aid of a labor, to engage a target.

In stark contrast to his formidable and intimidating appearance, Yamazaki possesses a gentle, caring, and timid personality. He is soft-spoken, speaks infrequently, and is known for being easily moved to tears. He is perhaps the most emotionally sensitive member of the rough-and-tumble unit, showing deep affection for animals; he has been seen crying with joy when a rescued kitten recovers and collapsing in worry when one of his chickens goes missing. His nurturing side finds an outlet in tending to the vegetable garden, particularly tomatoes, and looking after the hen-house at the SV-2 barracks in his spare time, activities that meaningfully contribute to the officers' food supply. He also has a feminine side, such as beautifully decorating his own packed lunches. His kindness and quiet strength often position him as a mediator within the frequently contentious and highly individualistic Division 2, where he uses his physical presence to help maintain order.

During the events of Patlabor: The Movie and its sequel, his role is consistent with his established function within the team. As the carrier driver, he is essential for mobilizing the Ingram units. In combat situations, he leverages his unique strength to provide long-range, heavy firepower with the anti-labor rifle, acting as a vital support element for the pilots. His character remains largely stable through these films, defined by his gentle disposition, his physical prowess, and his dedication as the non-piloting heart of the team. In later installments of the franchise, it is revealed that he eventually returns to his family's roots, overcoming his seasickness to become a fisherman in Okinawa.
