Description
Mr. Satan, also known by the ring name Hercule in some English adaptations, is a human martial artist and a supporting character in the Dragon Ball GT anime series. His real name is Mark. By the time of Dragon Ball GT, he has long since established himself as the self-proclaimed world champion and the most beloved hero on Earth, a reputation he built on false claims of defeating the villains Cell and Majin Buu in previous years. The public continues to regard him as the planet’s greatest protector, and he enjoys immense wealth and global celebrity status, living a life of luxury and media attention.

In Dragon Ball GT, Mr. Satan retains the same core personality traits that defined him in earlier series. He is flamboyant, boastful, and theatrical, delivering grand speeches and maintaining an exaggerated air of confidence in public. His ego is immense, and he consistently takes credit for victories achieved by Goku and the other Z fighters, often believing his own hype. This comedic arrogance is balanced by a genuinely good heart and a strong sense of family. While self-serving at times, he is not malicious, and his motivations are rooted in a desire to be admired and to protect those he loves, though he rarely understands the true scale of the threats he faces.

Mr. Satan’s role in Dragon Ball GT is primarily that of comic relief and a grounding human presence in a story dominated by godlike Saiyans and cosmic threats. He represents the perspective of the ordinary person, providing moments of humor through his overblown reactions and his inability to grasp the immense power levels around him. However, he also serves an important emotional function, particularly in relation to his family. His most significant story involvement comes during the Baby Saga. When the parasitic Tsufurujin Baby begins taking over Earth, Mr. Satan tries to stand firm with his daughter Videl and granddaughter Pan. He is eventually possessed by Baby himself, a symbolic moment that underscores the villain's far-reaching threat, as even Earth’s greatest public symbol is overwhelmed. After being freed, he remains largely oblivious to the true nature of the battle but resumes his role as a public figurehead. During the Shadow Dragons Saga, his appearances are more limited, but he continues to act as an emotional anchor, representing the hope and fear of the common populace as the planet falls into chaos.

Key relationships define his presence in the series. His bond with his granddaughter, Pan, is the most prominent and emotionally resonant aspect of his character in Dragon Ball GT. He is intensely proud of her and supports her in everything she does, even though he is dimly aware that she is far more powerful than he could ever be. His affection for her is sincere, and she in turn respects his courage and his unwavering love for their family. His relationship with his daughter Videl remains steady, with him acting as a protective and doting father. As a grandfather to Pan and father-in-law to Son Gohan, he is thus connected to the core Saiyan family, though he interacts with Goku and the other warriors less frequently than in previous series. He also continues to live with the benevolent Majin Buu, now known as Mr. Buu, who acts as a loyal friend and protector.

In terms of development, Mr. Satan shows little change in his public persona across Dragon Ball GT. He remains the same grandiose, fame-hungry figure. However, his role shifts to highlight his enduring decency and emotional courage. While physically weak compared to the series' main fighters, he consistently demonstrates a willingness to face danger for the sake of his loved ones, even when he knows he is outmatched. This emotional bravery, combined with his genuine love for Pan and his desire to maintain a brave face for her, adds a layer of depth that elevates him beyond a simple comic figure. His final moments in the series, where he tries to comfort Pan after Goku’s departure, reinforce his importance as a source of familial strength.

Regarding abilities, Mr. Satan is physically strong by the standards of an ordinary human, having once been a legitimate world martial arts champion through conventional training in a dojo known as Satan Castle. He knows several named techniques, such as the Satan Miracle Special, the Ultra Super Megaton Punch, the Rolling Attack Satan Punch, and the Dynamite Kick. However, in the context of Dragon Ball GT, his combat abilities are entirely obsolete. He poses no threat to any major villain and cannot keep up with the superhuman battles taking place around him. He has no ki-based powers, cannot fly, and relies entirely on bravado and luck in physical confrontations. His greatest assets are not his fighting skill but his charisma, his status as a global icon, and his capacity for genuine emotional connection, which allow him to serve as a symbol of humanity and a source of comfort when the world is in crisis.
