Description
Mari is a supporting character in the anime film Project A-ko and its sequels. She is a student at Graviton High School and stands out for her extraordinary physical appearance: she is at least eight feet tall, with tanned skin, an enormous musculature, and wears a school uniform with a long skirt. Her design and mannerisms are a deliberate parody of Kenshiro from the manga and anime series Fist of the North Star, including a similar fighting style and the tendency for her clothing to tear when she flexes. Despite her intimidating frame, Mari has a notably beautiful singing voice.
Personality-wise, Mari adopts a tough, menacing persona typical of a sukeban, or girl boss. She leads a small gang of female delinquents at school and presents herself as a formidable opponent. However, her ferocity is quickly undercut by the sheer power of the main protagonist, A-ko, whom she is never able to defeat. Mari’s motivation is primarily transactional: she acts as hired muscle for the wealthy and scheming B-ko, carrying out orders to intimidate or physically confront A-ko and C-ko. There is little genuine loyalty in this arrangement, and Mari serves more as a tool than a true ally.
In the story, Mari’s role is that of a recurring comedic antagonist. She is first dispatched by B-ko to capture C-ko so that B-ko can rescue her, but Mari moves too slowly, and A-ko intervenes first. Throughout the film and its sequels, Mari is consistently outmatched by A-ko’s superhuman abilities, her presence serving to highlight just how far above normal human limits A-ko operates. Despite her repeated failures, she remains a regular fixture in the school-based conflicts, often providing a baseline for comedic contrast.
Mari’s key relationships are with B-ko, who employs her, and with A-ko, who effortlessly defeats her. She also interacts with C-ko, though her attempts to harm or capture C-ko are always thwarted. The character undergoes no significant development; she remains a static figure whose appearances are defined by her physical strength and her inability to overcome A-ko.
Notable abilities include her immense physical strength and size, which far exceed those of an average human, allowing her to engage in brawls and overpower ordinary people. Her fighting style mimics the pressure-point strikes and dramatic poses of Fist of the North Star, though she lacks the superhuman speed of A-ko. Additionally, her beautiful voice is an unexpected trait that contrasts with her brutish appearance. Overall, Mari is a humorous parody character whose primary function is to demonstrate the power gap between normal thugs and the series’ superhuman leads.
