Scott McNeil
Description
Scott McNeil is an Australian-born Canadian actor widely recognized for his prolific career in voice acting, particularly in animation and anime dubbing. He was born in Brisbane, Australia, on September 15, 1962, and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, when he was four years old. His interest in voice acting was sparked at the age of twelve during a trip to Disneyland, where he learned that the voice greeting visitors at the Haunted Mansion belonged to Paul Frees, the same actor who voiced the Pillsbury Doughboy. McNeil pursued theatre, studying at Vancouver's Studio 58, and worked as an Elvis impersonator before formally entering the voice acting industry in the late 1980s.
McNeil's first foray into voice work was on The New Adventures of He-Man, with his initial anime role being in the Project A-ko films, where he provided voices for multiple characters, including Captain Napolipolita and Kei Yuki. He has since become one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian animation, lending his talents to thousands of characters over his decades-long career.
His work in English dubs of Japanese anime is extensive and includes many prominent roles. He voiced Captain Harlock in both Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999, as well as Duo Maxwell in the highly popular Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition. In the Dragon Ball Z franchise, McNeil was the original voice of Piccolo and many other characters for the Ocean Group dubs. He also portrayed Kōga in Inuyasha, Hohenheim of Light in Fullmetal Alchemist, and Principal Kuno in Ranma ½. Other notable anime credits include Dr. Wily in Mega Man: Upon a Star, Tokai in Sanctuary, Ali Al-Saachez in Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Jajuka in The Vision of Escaflowne, and Shiki in One Piece Film: Strong World. He also voiced Amergan in Highlander: The Search for Vengeance.
McNeil's voice acting portfolio extends deeply into Western animation, where he is celebrated for his versatility. He is particularly renowned for his work in the Transformers franchise, taking on numerous roles across different series. In Transformers: Armada and Transformers: Energon, he voiced Jetfire, and he also played Strongarm in Energon, as well as Backstop and Snarl in Transformers: Cybertron. One of his most acclaimed performances is in the Beast Wars series, where he voiced multiple characters including Rattrap, Dinobot, Silverbolt, and Waspinator—work he has described as being among his proudest.
