Description
Android 16 is a character from the Dragon Ball Z narrative, created by the villainous Dr. Gero of the Red Ribbon Army. He is a complete mechanical being, built with the primary directive of killing the protagonist, Goku. In a significant piece of background information, Dr. Gero modeled Android 16's appearance after his own deceased son. This personal connection led Gero to design the android with a kind and peace-loving nature to protect him from being senselessly destroyed, which ironically caused Gero to consider his own creation a "failure" for not being aggressive enough.

Android 16 stands out from other androids due to his silent, stoic, and gentle personality. Despite his immense power and intimidating size, he is rarely aggressive and prefers to observe his surroundings. He develops a profound love for nature, animals, and all living things, a trait that becomes central to his character. Unlike his companions, Android 17 and Android 18, he does not enjoy fighting or causing destruction. His primary goal shifts from assassinating Goku to protecting his android siblings and the natural world he has come to cherish, specifically from the threat of the bio-android Cell, who seeks to absorb them.

In the story, Android 16 is activated by Android 17 after they rebel against Dr. Gero. When Cell appears to absorb the androids, 16 becomes a key defender. He engages Cell in battle, managing to hold his own and even briefly overpowering the creature before Cell transforms into a more powerful state and severely damages him. After this defeat, the battered android is taken by Krillin to Capsule Corporation, where Bulma and her father repair him. During these repairs, they discover and remove a powerful bomb installed inside his body.

His most pivotal role occurs during the Cell Games, a tournament hosted by the now-perfect Cell. Believing the bomb is still active, Android 16 ambushes Cell and attempts to self-destruct to destroy him, but the explosion does not occur. Cell then retaliates, blasting the android into pieces, leaving only his head intact. The head is thrown near a young Gohan, who is paralyzed by fear and unwilling to fight. In his final moments, Android 16 encourages Gohan to release his anger and fight to protect the earth and the life he loves, telling him that fighting for a good cause is not a sin. Cell crushes the head, and this act of destruction finally triggers Gohan's rage, causing him to transform into a Super Saiyan 2 and ultimately defeat Cell. His death serves as the primary catalyst for this crucial transformation.

Key relationships define his journey. He was created by Dr. Gero, who he was designed to obey but whose programming he ultimately rejects. He acts as a silent protector to Androids 17 and 18, viewing them as companions. He forms a brief but impactful bond with Krillin, who helps him get repaired, and his final words are directed at Gohan, inspiring the young warrior to save the world.

Android 16 possesses several notable abilities. As a completely mechanical android, he does not emit a ki signature, making him difficult to detect, but he has a built-in power radar to locate opponents. His most famous technique is the Hell's Flash, where he detaches his forearms to reveal powerful energy cannons that unleash a devastating blast. He can also launch his fists as Rocket Punches. Before its removal, his ultimate weapon was his Self-Destruct mechanism, which he believed was powerful enough to kill Cell. His mechanical body grants him superhuman strength, durability, and the ability to fly.
