Description
Captain Napolipolita is a character from the anime film Project A-ko, serving as a captain in the Alpha Cygnan space navy. She hails from the Lepton Kingdom of Alpha Cygni, a civilization that is exclusively female, though some of its members, including the Captain, resemble human males. Her defining mission is a sixteen-year odyssey across the universe to locate C-ko Kotobuki, the lost Fourth Princess of the Fifth Queen, who crashed on Earth as an infant.

In terms of appearance, she is known for her striking green hair, ever-present wraparound coolshades, and impeccably tailored attire, which typically includes a trench coat or a dramatically swirling cloak. This stylish and composed facade is meant to project an image of a commanding and mysterious space captain. However, this image quickly shatters, as her long years of space travel have led to a complete and debilitating addiction to alcohol. When deprived of a drink, especially in moments of danger or crisis, she unravels and becomes largely incompetent.

Napolipolita's primary role in the story is that of an antagonist who arrives on Earth to reclaim C-ko. While the film initially focuses on the rivalry between A-ko and B-ko, Napolipolita's intervention escalates the conflict into a full-scale alien encounter. Her spaceship is interpreted by Earth's military as an invasion force, leading to a battle that rages from space into Graviton City. Her goal is not malicious conquest but the retrieval of her planet's royalty. It is only when she and her operative, D, successfully abduct C-ko that the main characters, A-ko and B-ko, set aside their differences to stage a rescue. The resulting fight inside the alien ship ends with its navigation system destroyed, causing it to crash-land and become precariously perched atop Graviton City’s Military Command Tower.

Following the events of the first film, Napolipolita becomes stranded on Earth. Her character development focuses on her miserable longing to return home to the Lepton Kingdom. To survive and raise funds for the immense repairs needed for her damaged ship, she demonstrates a degree of entrepreneurial spirit. She converts the grounded vessel into a massive commercial venture, a thirty-thousand-room luxury hotel complex featuring a shopping mall, amusement park, and casino. Despite putting on a brave face for the human population, she is deeply homesick, and the financial pressures of her situation are such that she and her crew are sometimes reduced to begging for donations. In a later film, her addiction directly causes her to miss her only chance to return home, as she stops to get drunk on the way to the aliens' landing site.

Napolipolita shares a key relationship with her subordinate, D, who is a long-term operative stationed on Earth. While D handles reconnaissance and ground combat, Napolipolita manages the broader strategic and, later, entrepreneurial efforts. D remains a loyal officer under her command, sharing her goal of returning to their home planet, ideally with Princess C-ko. The character also serves as a parody of the iconic anime captain, Captain Harlock, which is most evident in her ship's design, particularly its forward section that resembles the famous Arcadia, and in her overall dramatic aesthetic. While she has no superhuman abilities, her notable traits are her leadership of a starship, her resilience in adapting to a hostile situation, and the stark contrast between her grandiose posturing and the pathetic reality of her crippling alcohol addiction.
