Description
Georgie, often referred to as Barbara in some adaptations, is the central character of this story set in 19th century Australia. She is introduced as a young girl living happily on a farm with her two brothers, Abel and Arturo, and her parents. From an early age, Georgie is notably different in appearance from her brothers, possessing blonde hair and green eyes, a physical distinction that hints at her mysterious origins. Her personality as a child is characterized by being cheerful, outgoing, energetic, and somewhat mischievous, as she enjoys playing in the fields and having her brothers search for her. A significant item from her past is a gold bracelet, which she initially finds bothersome during play but later promises to always wear after nearly losing it.
The course of Georgie's life is dramatically altered by a series of family tragedies. Her father dies from injuries sustained while trying to save her during a river flood, an event for which her mother unfairly blames her. Following this loss, the family struggles to maintain their farm. As time passes, it becomes increasingly clear that Georgie is not the biological sister of Abel and Arturo. A visiting painter is the first to note her striking physical difference, and the secret of her adoption begins to surface. She eventually learns that she is an orphan taken in by the family and that her natural father was a deported criminal from England, while her birth mother is deceased. The revelation of her non-blood relation to her brothers coincides with Abel and Arturo developing romantic feelings for her, a change that their mother notices and deeply disapproves of, further straining her relationship with Georgie.
Motivated by a desire to uncover her true identity and to reunite with her first love, a young British nobleman named Lowell whom she met in Australia, Georgie travels to London. Her journey is shadowed by a complex love triangle, as her adoptive brothers, Abel and Arturo, follow her to England, driven by their own unresolved feelings for her. In London, she becomes entangled in the aristocratic world, which is filled with both luxury and dangerous intrigues, including a plot that threatens the queen. Throughout her journey, she experiences both the kindness and cruelty of the world as she seeks Lowell, who, despite his love for her, is hesitant to sacrifice his social position.
Georgie’s primary relationships are the driving force of the narrative. Her dynamic with her adoptive mother is one of constant rejection and blame, while her bond with her adoptive brothers evolves from one of childhood play and protection to a more complicated, romantic tension. The brothers themselves represent different forms of this affection, with Abel being more possessive and Arturo more discreet and willing to sacrifice his own feelings. Her key relationship with Lowell represents her romantic ideal and a connection to her own past, while also presenting the practical obstacles of class and ambition. In terms of abilities, Georgie does not possess any superhuman or extraordinary skills; her notable traits are her resilience, her cheerful nature in the face of hardship, and her determined spirit, which compels her to leave her home and travel across the ocean to uncover her past and pursue her love. Her development sees her transition from a carefree, playful girl into a young woman forced to confront the painful truths of her birth, the complex feelings of those around her, and the difficult choices required to build her own future.
