Description
Arthur Buttman is one of the two adoptive brothers of the title character in the anime Lady Georgie. He is a member of the Buttman family, living with them on their farm in rural Australia during the 19th century. As the younger brother of Abel, Arthur grows up alongside Georgie, unaware for much of his childhood that she is not his biological sibling. The family patriarch found Georgie as an abandoned baby, and Arthur’s mother, Mary, always resented the girl, though this secret of Georgie’s true origin is kept from her for many years.

Arthur is characterized by a kind, selfless, and gentle nature. From a young age, he harbors deep romantic feelings for Georgie, but unlike his older brother Abel, Arthur is far more reserved and anguished by this attraction. His primary motivation is not to win Georgie for himself but to ensure her happiness and protect her from pain. He often acts as a mediator, trying to temper Abel’s more forceful declarations of love and worrying that revealing the truth of their non-blood relation would devastate Georgie. This self-sacrificing trait defines his role in the story, as he frequently prioritizes Georgie’s emotional well-being over his own desires.

As the plot progresses to London, Arthur’s role shifts from a protective brother to a victim of the cruel aristocratic world. Upon arriving in England to follow Georgie and inform her of their mother’s death, he becomes entangled with the dangerous Dangering family. Because he accidentally uncovers their criminal activities, including drug smuggling, Arthur is captured and held prisoner in their mansion. His time in captivity is harrowing; he is subjected to torture and harassment by Arwin, the son of Duke Dangering, and is kept in a state of degradation, treated almost as a pet by the family. Abel makes several failed attempts to rescue him, and Arthur’s suffering in this gilded cage highlights the stark contrast between his innocent, rural upbringing and the corrupt machinations of London’s high society.

Arthur’s key relationships are centered on his family. His bond with his brother Abel is complex, defined by a shared love for Georgie that creates both rivalry and a deep, underlying fraternal loyalty. In the end, Arthur’s love for Georgie remains unrequited and one-sided, as her heart belongs to Lowell J. Gray. Unlike the original manga, where Arthur’s fate is tragic and he commits suicide after being broken by drugs, the anime provides a more hopeful resolution. In the anime adaptation, Arthur is successfully rescued by Georgie, Abel, and her biological father. Following his rescue, he provides crucial testimony that clears Georgie’s father of false accusations and brings the Dangering family to justice. The series concludes with Arthur deciding to return to Australia alongside Georgie and Abel, leaving behind the painful memories of England to rebuild their lives together on the farm where they grew up.

Arthur’s notable abilities lie not in physical strength or combat but in his emotional resilience and moral fortitude. Even when subjected to psychological and physical torment at the hands of the Dangering family, his inherent goodness remains intact. His greatest strength is his capacity for selfless love and quiet endurance, making him the emotional anchor for his siblings amidst the turmoil they face.
