Description
Joseph Carter Jones, commonly known as Joey, is a thirteen-year-old boy living in Center City, California, who serves as the protagonist of his story. He is an orphaned American teen living with his grandmother, Virginia Jones, after the deaths of both of his parents. His father, Brian Carter Jones, was a coal miner who died in a mine accident while saving his fellow workers, an act of heroism that deeply shapes Joey's worldview. His mother, Katherine May-Jones, passed away not long after her husband. This history of loss has left Joey and his older sister, Holly Jones, in the care of their grandmother, and the family lives under financial strain. To help make ends meet, Joey works a part-time job at a local diner, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility from a young age.
In terms of personality, Joey is fundamentally kind-hearted, upbeat, and resilient, despite facing considerable hardship. He is often the target of bullying at school, particularly from older students like Will Davis and his friend Nick, due to his small stature and his friendship with Lina Davis, Will's younger sister. He is described as being somewhat scrawny and not particularly athletic or academically gifted, which contributes to a feeling of not fitting in. Nevertheless, he remains cheerful and is driven by a deep-seated desire to be a hero, an ideal he inherited from his memory of his father. His initial belief is that owning a popular toy robot called a Heybo could be the catalyst for changing his life and giving him the strength to protect those he cares about.
Joey's motivation is rooted in protection and the desire to live up to the example set by his father. He wants to shield his friends and family from harm, and this drive becomes his primary mission after the arrival of an alien race known as the Skrugg. He is not initially a fighter but grows into his role as a protector, his courage and confidence increasing with each challenge he faces. His role in the story is that of an unlikely hero. After finding and repairing a broken Heybo that he names Heroman, a strange bolt of lightning brings the robot to life, transforming it into a giant, powerful mecha. Using a special controller that forms a gauntlet on his arm, Joey is able to command Heroman, making the duo Earth's primary defense against the invading Skrugg forces.
His key relationships are central to his character. His best friend is Simon Psy Kaina, a fellow student who uses crutches and a motorized skateboard, and who consistently supports Joey. Joey shares a close, childhood friendship with Lina Davis, a cheerleader from a wealthy family, and his feelings for her often serve as a significant motivator. Conversely, he has a contentious relationship with Lina's older brother, Will Davis, a football player who bullies him to keep him away from his sister. Professor Matthew Denton, his science teacher, becomes a crucial ally; his experiments inadvertently drew the Skrugg to Earth, and he works to help Joey and Heroman in their fight. Joey's older sister, Holly, also plays an important role, returning to Center City after the invasion begins.
Joey undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He begins as a meek and timid boy who often hides behind Heroman's immense power, feeling unsure of himself. By approximately twenty episodes into the series, his growth in confidence and bravery is such that the dynamic shifts, and he becomes the one leading the fight, with Heroman supporting him. This evolution from a passive dreamer to an active, decisive hero is a core part of his journey.
In addition to his role as Heroman's commander, Joey himself gains notable abilities through the controller gauntlet. These powers include super speed, allowing him to move as a blur, and the ability to generate a static energy barrier or force field that can repel attacks. In moments of extreme duress when Heroman is incapacitated, Joey can also enter a rage form, where his body glows red and his gauntlet becomes an unstable, shape-shielding weapon that can deliver flaming punches. These powers make him a capable hero in his own right, not just a passive operator of a giant robot.
