Description
Kazuto Moriguchi is a central character in the narrative, depicted as a Japanese teenager around fourteen years of age. He comes of age in a devastated mid-21st century Japan, a world ravaged by catastrophic global warming that has submerged vast coastal areas and crippled the nation's economy. In this dystopian setting, Kazuto is identified as someone possessing a rare and valuable mental faculty known as Accurate Intuition, often abbreviated as A.I.. This sixth sense allows its user to predict the immediate future, granting heightened reflexes and combat precognition, which makes individuals like Kazuto invaluable as pilots of giant robotic weapons called R.B., or Robotic Weaponry. His personal interests include listening to music and following car races, offering a glimpse into his life before being thrust into the conflict.
Kazuto is recruited by the Japanese military organization JESAS, which has been formed to stabilize the country but harbors dark ambitions for global control. As a cadet, he begins training to become a pilot, alongside other young possessors of A.I.. His early days at JESAS are marked by a typical adolescent awkwardness, highlighted by clumsy social encounters, particularly with a fellow pilot named Kanna Asou, with whom he shares a developing romantic interest. Despite the rigorous military environment and the pressure of impending combat, his motivations are initially personal, seeking a reason to fight while navigating the complexities of friendship and first love.
Kazuto's role in the story is fundamentally defined by a profound shift in allegiance. During a battle, JESAS deploys a devastating experimental weapon called the e4, an energy cannon of immense power. In this incident, Kazuto and his companions are treated as expendable assets by their own commanders, an act of betrayal that shatters his loyalty to the organization. This event serves as the catalyst for his character development, forcing him to confront the corrupt nature of the military power he serves. In response, he makes the pivotal decision to defect to the opposing faction, Green Frontier, an international protection agency dedicated to preserving the Earth and stopping JESAS. This choice is deeply conflicted, as it compels him to take up arms against the friends and comrades he had come to care for within JESAS, placing him at the emotional center of the larger ideological war. His relationships are thus central to the plot, particularly his bond and subsequent adversarial dynamic with Kanna Asou, whose loyalties may lie elsewhere.
As a pilot, Kazuto’s primary ability is his A.I., which enhances his combat effectiveness within his mecha. However, his narrative significance extends beyond his piloting skills. His journey traces an arc from a somewhat awkward and undirected youth to a young man forced to make a morally complex decision. By defecting to Green Frontier, he evolves from a mere soldier following orders into an individual who chooses his own side, motivated by the betrayal he suffered and a newfound conviction to oppose JESAS's destructive plans. This transformation positions him as a key figure in the struggle that will determine the planet's future.
