TV-Series
Description
Keith Harcourt is a seventeen year old aristocrat who leads a double life as the famous phantom thief known as Black Rose, or Kaitou Kurobara. He is the older twin brother of Francis Harcourt, though some sources note they are the same age, and he physically resembles Francis so closely that they are often mistaken for one another. Keith has blonde hair and blue eyes. He abandoned his life as a nobleman after completing his schooling at age fifteen, choosing to walk away from the Harcourt family to pursue his own sense of justice.
In his public identity as Black Rose, Keith wears a distinctive black costume with a cape and mask, and he is known for leaving calling cards to taunt his victims before his heists. He steals exclusively from wealthy aristocrats whom he believes are frivolous and self centered, redistributing the stolen wealth to the poor. This has made him beloved by the general public and a frequent subject of journalists seeking to cover his exploits.
Keiths personality is defined by a cold, quiet, and reserved exterior that contrasts sharply with his brothers warmer and more openly idealistic nature. Unlike Francis, who believes in the concept of noblesse oblige and works within the system to help the less fortunate, Keith is far more cynical and disenchanted. He has expressed self hatred for being an aristocrat himself. This deeper cynicism stems from the death of his mother; while Francis remembered only their mother's kinder side, Keith witnessed her secret unhappiness as a woman trapped in a gilded cage, which profoundly shaped his view of aristocratic life.
Keiths primary motivation is the pursuit of justice in a world where he believes the wealthy exploit those in difficult economic situations. He does not believe that charity and goodwill from the nobility are sufficient to address systemic inequality. His actions are also driven by a protective instinct toward Nadja Applefield. He fell in love with her, and his feelings for her become a source of great personal suffering, as he often believes his love is not reciprocated and that she is truly in love with Francis instead. He has appointed himself her protector, largely because her love of freedom and rejection of a confined life reminds him of his own mothers hidden pain, and he does not want Nadja to suffer the same fate.
In the story, Keith is the true individual who rescued Nadja from the fire at the Applefield Orphanage, an act that led Nadja to mistakenly believe Francis was her savior and refer to him as the "knight of the shining eyes". He crosses paths with Nadja multiple times during her travels with the Dandelion Troupe. Initially, Nadja is angered by his dry wit and his actions as a thief, but as she comes to understand his true motives, she develops greater empathy for him. His true identity as the Black Rose is revealed midway through the series. He also discovered a hidden emblem on Nadjas ring and investigated it, uncovering the secret that she is actually a member of the Preminger family, one of the wealthiest families in Austria. This discovery further fuels his desire to protect her from the troubles and constraints he associates with aristocratic life.
Keiths key relationships are defined by his familial bond and his romantic conflict. His relationship with his twin brother Francis is complex; while they share a desire to help the poor, their methods and outlooks differ drastically. He was angered upon learning that Francis had impersonated him as the Black Rose in an attempt to protect his secret identity. Both brothers fall in love with Nadja, creating a central emotional conflict for Keith, who suffers from the belief that his love is unrequited. He also has a significant adversarial relationship with Hermann, who captured Keith when he attempted to retrieve Nadjas brooch; Hermann had Keith imprisoned and whipped until he was weakened and bloody, though Keith ultimately escaped and delivered the brooch to Nadja. He also saved Nadja when the Duke attempted to send her away to a boarding school.
Keiths character develops from a mysterious and aloof figure into a more openly compassionate protector. His cynicism is gradually tempered by his connection to Nadja, whose love of freedom deeply touches him and reinforces his commitment to his cause. While he maintains his identity as the Black Rose, his personal suffering over his unreturned feelings for Nadja and his protective determination shape much of his arc.
As a thief, Keith possesses notable abilities including acrobatics, stealth, and strategic planning, all necessary for executing his heists and escaping capture. He is also a skilled equestrian, as demonstrated when he defended Nadja on horseback at the orphanage. His physical and emotional endurance is considerable, evidenced by his ability to escape imprisonment and recover from the severe whipping inflicted by Hermann. His investigative skills allowed him to uncover the secret of Nadjas ring and her true family lineage.
