Later that day, a woman named Rosemary arrives at the orphanage and claims to be Nadja’s mother. Rosemary presents a forged letter and persuades the orphanage director to allow Nadja to leave with her. During the carriage ride, Rosemary orders her companion to steal the brooch from Nadja’s luggage. Nadja overhears the plot and flees into the woods. She stumbles upon the Dandelion Troupe, a traveling circus setting up camp. The troupe’s leader, Herman, shelters her, and the performers help her hide when Rosemary’s men search the area. After Rosemary retreats, Nadja explains that she now believes her true mother is alive somewhere in Europe. She asks the count about the woman, and he explains that she was his late wife, a celebrated dancer who died several years ago. That evening, the troupe performs a play outdoors, and Rosalie secretly watches from a window. When a stage lantern catches fire, Rosalie rushes out to warn the performers, breaking her self-imposed isolation. Afterward, Rosalie opens the portrait room to Nadja and shows her the dancer’s costumes and a photograph of the woman. Nadja realizes the woman is not her mother, but she learns that the dancer once traveled with a traveling performance group. The count gifts Nadja a small rose-shaped brooch that belonged to his wife, urging her to continue her journey. Nadja resolves to follow the dancer’s past route, hoping it will lead her to her own mother.

The Dandelion troupe arrives in a port town and sets up for a public performance. Nadja assists with props and watches the other members rehearse, gradually learning the routines of traveling performers. She keeps her mother’s rosary tied to her wrist and frequently touches it, holding onto the hope of finding her. After the show, a woman named Rita approaches Nadja and asks to see the rosary. Rita explains that she was a dancer in the same troupe as Nadja’s mother, Yvette, years ago. She recognizes the rosary as a gift Yvette always wore. Rita tells Nadja that Yvette left the troupe after becoming pregnant and later gave the rosary to the orphanage where Nadja grew up. She also reveals that Yvette is alive and now performs in Paris under a stage name. The information gives Nadja a specific destination and a clear reason to continue traveling. She decides to stay with the Dandelion troupe, whose planned route will eventually reach Paris. That night, Herman observes the troupe from a rooftop and reports to a man named Mr. Tachibana, confirming that he has located Nadja. The next morning, the troupe departs for their next town, with Nadja carrying a renewed sense of purpose. Herman follows at a distance, preparing to act when the moment suits him.

At the ball Nadja wears a simple dress and a mask, hoping to find clues about her mother. Francis follows her to the ball and warns her about the strict social rules of the aristocrats. A gentleman in a black mask approaches Nadja, speaks kindly to her, and gives her a rose identical to the one in her mother’s photograph. The gentleman disappears before she can learn his name. Rosemarie Harcourt, the family’s stern matriarch, discovers Nadja in the garden and accuses her of trespassing. Francis pulls Nadja away just before guards arrive, and they escape through a servants’ passage. The Dandelion troupe, alerted by a performer who saw Nadja leave, arrives and uses their circus skills to create chaos, allowing Nadja and Hermann to escape. After the escape, Nadja learns that the men work for the Countess, a noblewoman who desires the brooch. The Countess, watching from a distance, acknowledges the failure but orders a more elaborate plan. Nadja rejoins the troupe, now aware that her search for her mother has put her in direct danger. Nadja agrees to deliver a letter from Francis to the commoner girl, acting as a messenger to avoid drawing attention. The troupe’s leader, Mr. Hashimoto, notices Nadja’s distraction and advises her to consider the consequences of interfering in others’ lives. On the night of the performance, Francis appears in the audience, having decided to face his family rather than flee. After the show, he thanks Nadja and bids her farewell with a kiss on the cheek, a gesture that leaves her both surprised and contemplative. The encounter reinforces Nadja’s awareness that her own journey is about seeking her mother, yet it also introduces her to the complexities of parting and the weight of choices made by others. As the troupe packs up to leave the next morning, Nadja quietly reflects on the brief but intense friendship she shared with Francis, wondering how many more such meetings and farewells her search will bring.

While exploring the attic, she discovers a small music box that once belonged to her. The music box contains a hidden compartment with a faded photograph of a woman and a man. The photograph’s inscription is partially worn away, leaving only the word “Paris” legible. Sister Martha reveals she kept the box because she knew Nadja would one day seek answers. She explains that the woman in the photograph is Nadja’s mother, but she never learned the man’s identity or what became of them. The discovery strengthens Nadja’s resolve to continue traveling with the Dandelion Troupe. She realizes her journey must now lead her to Paris, the only solid lead she possesses. During the routine, she spots Jean in the audience and weaves one of his roses into her balance, turning the act into an emotionally charged display. The crowd responds with sustained applause, and the Dandelion troupe secures enough attendance to remain in Paris. After the show, Nadja gives Jean the evening’s takings, and he agrees to abandon theft. Nadja winds the music box and a melody triggers a faint memory of her mother humming the same tune. Rosemary speaks of her past rivalry with bitterness yet reveals she has kept the music box all this time. Later, Hermann observes the encounter from a distance and writes down notes, continuing his silent investigation into Nadja’s origins. Moved by Nadja’s words and the warmth of the troupe members, Rose agrees to go back. Before parting, she gives Nadja a small brooch as a token of gratitude. Hermann, the Countess’s husband, confesses that he colluded with the Rosso family to keep Nadja’s identity hidden in exchange for political support. Nadja rejects the justifications, pointing out that the deception cost her years of family connection and exposed her to danger alone. Thomas O’Brien arrives with armed men and threatens to reveal the Countess’s past affairs if she does not cede control of the estate’s inheritance to him. The Countess counters by publicly declaring Nadja as her legitimate daughter in front of witnesses, stripping Thomas of his leverage over the inheritance.
