Description
John Whittard is a supporting character in the anime Ashita no Nadja. He is a young, talented pianist from England, often referred to as a genius in his home country. However, despite his natural abilities, he experiences a significant creative block when he moves to Paris to study music, finding himself uninspired by his new environment after many months without much success.

In terms of personality, John initially presents himself with a very haughty and arrogant attitude. This is particularly noticeable in his interactions with other characters, including the members of the Dandelion Troupe, whom he often looks down upon. This aloof exterior, however, masks deeper feelings of envy. He secretly admires the Dandelion Troupe for the freedom they possess in their nomadic lifestyle and the genuine pleasure they take in their artistic craft, something he feels is missing from his own disciplined and pressured pursuit of musical perfection.

John's role in the story becomes significant when he crosses paths with the protagonist, Nadja Applefield. Her sunny, persistent, and optimistic personality is the catalyst that helps break him out of his creative slump. She offers him a fresh perspective, suggesting ways he can embrace his new life in France while still holding onto a piece of his English identity. This encounter is pivotal, as it helps put the troubled genius back on the path to musical success. Later in the series, John returns this favor in a crucial way. He plays a song during a piano recital that is hauntingly familiar to Nadja, which leads to a major revelation. He provides Nadja with the sheet music for her favorite lullaby, which is signed by her father, and connects her to an important person from her past, helping her unlock key mysteries about her origins.

Beyond his connection to Nadja, one of John Whittard’s most important relationships is with Francis Harcourt. The two were classmates and roommates at a boarding school, maintaining a close friendship from those days. His only notable ability, as described, is his genius-level talent for playing the piano. He is a composer as well, and his music serves as both a personal struggle and the primary means through which he interacts with and affects the story.
