Description
Abel Geiger is a German member of the Dandelion Troupe, a traveling performance group, where he serves as the Pierrot, a role dedicated to comedy and laughter. On stage, he wears clown makeup and performs amusing antics that include juggling, acrobatics, and balancing on a large ball. Despite his profession as a comedic performer, Abel possesses a serious and wise demeanor offstage. He is highly educated and acts as a scholar and mentor figure, particularly to the protagonist, Nadja Applefield. His knowledge proves invaluable when he helps Nadja search for books in libraries and translates passages from her mother's diary, which is written in German, a language Nadja does not know because she was raised in England.

Abel's cheerful stage presence conceals a deeply sad and troubled past. Before joining the Dandelion Troupe, he was the doctor in an impoverished village. His dedication to his patients led him to steal medicine from a hospital to combat an epidemic and save lives, an act for which he was imprisoned. Following his release from jail, he was forced to abandon his own family. His son, Stefan, had been afflicted by the same illness and was left permanently using a wheelchair as a result. This tragic history informs his character, adding depth and gravity to his role as the troupe's clown. His key relationships are primarily with the other members of the Dandelion Troupe, and he notably serves as a crucial source of guidance and support for Nadja on her journey, using his intellect and life experience to aid her quest. His notable abilities extend beyond his performance skills in juggling and acrobatics to include a strong scholarly knowledge and fluency in German, which directly advances the story's central mystery.
