Description
Nadja Applefield is the main character of the story, a Franco-Austrian girl raised at the Applefield Orphanage in early twentieth-century England. From a young age she displayed a sunny and charming disposition, along with a natural talent for dancing and an ability to make friends wherever she went. She took on responsibility early, often helping to care for the younger children at the orphanage. Despite her dependable side, she was also impulsive to the point of foolhardiness and extremely trusting, which sometimes led others to take advantage of her.
Nadja grew up believing her parents were dead. Shortly before her thirteenth birthday, she received a mysterious package containing a ball gown and a diary that had belonged to her birth mother, along with a letter suggesting her mother might still be alive. Her only possession from infancy was an elaborate heart-shaped brooch. When two men arrived at the orphanage to steal that brooch, Nadja fled and soon joined the traveling Dandelion Troupe, becoming a dancer in their performances. Her great driving motivation was to reunite with her mother, and this quest carried her across Europe.
In her travels, Nadja formed meaningful relationships with several people. She met the Harcourt twins, Francis and Keith, and initially felt drawn to Francis. As the story progressed, she appeared to fall in love with Keith, though she remained confused about her true feelings. She was also close to the members of the Dandelion Troupe, who served as a surrogate family. Characters such as the singer Sylvie acted as an older sister figure, while the fortune-teller Anna provided guidance and support.
Nadja underwent significant development over the course of the story. She transformed from an orphan living a sheltered life into a confident performer traveling the world. Her search for her mother forced her to confront questions about her true identity and her place in the world. In romantic matters, she had to navigate her feelings for Francis and Keith, and though she initially chose Francis, she later realized her heart belonged to Keith. Ultimately, she did not commit to either and returned to the Dandelion Troupe, leaving her romantic future open.
Her notable abilities included her skill as a dancer, a talent for making friends quickly, and a natural warmth that drew people to her. She also possessed a resilient spirit, enabling her to face dangers and emotional challenges on her journey.
