Description
Nadja Apple Field, also known as Nadja Applefield, is the protagonist of the early twentieth-century story. She is a Franco-Austrian girl who grew up at the Applefield orphanage in England believing her parents were dead. Her only possession from infancy is an elaborate heart-shaped brooch. Shortly before her thirteenth birthday, she receives a trunk containing a ball gown and a diary that belonged to her birth mother, along with a letter suggesting her mother may still be alive. When men arrive to steal the brooch, Nadja leaves the orphanage and joins the traveling Dandelion Troupe as a dancer, beginning a journey across Europe to find her mother.

Nadja is described as a sunny and charming girl with a natural talent for dancing and an ability to make friends wherever she goes. She shoulders responsibility well, often caring for younger children at the orphanage. However, she is also impulsive to the point of foolhardiness and extremely trusting, traits that others can take advantage of. Her greatest dream is to reunite with her mother, and this motivation drives her throughout the series.

Her role in the story is that of the central character whose quest for her identity and family forms the narrative. She performs as a dancer with the troupe, traveling through various countries and learning about herself along the way. Key relationships include the Harcourt twins, Francis and Keith. She initially feels drawn to Francis but later realizes she has deeper feelings for Keith, though she remains uncertain. Near the end of the series, she chooses neither twin and continues her travels with the Dandelion Troupe, leaving her romantic future open. Other important figures in her life are the members of the troupe: George, the strongman leader; Anna, the elderly seamstress and fortune teller; and Sylvie, the French singer who becomes a sisterly figure. She also encounters Rosemary, a former friend who impersonates her to claim her identity.

Nadja develops significantly over the course of the series. She grows from a naive orphan into a more self-aware young woman who must confront challenges to her identity and make difficult decisions about her future. Her notable abilities include her graceful dancing, which becomes both a means of performance and a way to connect with people, as well as her resilience, optimism, and talent for forging friendships.
