Movie
Description
Natsuki Shinohara is an eighteen-year-old third-year student at Kuonji High School, born on July 19, 1992. She is a member of the kendo club and is known throughout the school for her energetic and positive personality, which makes her well-liked among her peers. She comes from the Jinnouchi family, a historically powerful samurai lineage, and was raised in a large, tightly knit household that instilled in her a strong sense of honor and responsibility.
Natsuki is charismatic, confident, and socially adept, with a natural ability to bring people together. She also has a mischievous and playful side, as seen when she invites her quiet classmate Kenji Koiso to her great-grandmother Sakae Jinnouchi’s ninetieth birthday celebration and introduces him to her extended family as her fiancé without his prior knowledge. Her motivations are deeply rooted in her love for her family, especially her great-grandmother Sakae, whom she idolizes as a role model. She is fiercely loyal and willing to go to great lengths to protect those she cares about, even if her methods are sometimes impulsive or deceptive.
In the story, Natsuki plays a central role both as the catalyst for Kenji’s involvement with her family and as an emotional pillar during the crisis caused by the rogue artificial intelligence Love Machine. When Love Machine takes over the virtual world OZ and threatens real-world infrastructure, Natsuki refuses to stand by. She helps rally her family, encouraging them to work together and supporting Kenji’s efforts despite having little technical expertise. Her greatest contribution comes during the climactic confrontation, where she uses her skill in the traditional card game Koi-Koi, honed through years of playing with her great-grandmother, to face Love Machine in a high-stakes match inside OZ’s casino. With determination and strategic play, she wins back hundreds of hacked accounts, aided by OZ users worldwide who lend their accounts to her cause.
Her key relationships include Kenji Koiso, whom she initially ropes into her deception but comes to genuinely admire for his intelligence and courage, with romantic feelings developing between them over the course of the film. Her bond with her great-grandmother Sakae is the strongest emotional influence on her character; Sakae’s teachings about family and perseverance shape Natsuki’s actions and her eventual leadership. She also has a complicated childhood affection for her great-uncle Wabisuke Jinnouchi, whom she once called her “first love,” but his estrangement from the family after stealing the family fortune creates tension. Her relationship with her cousin Kazuma Ikezawa is one of mutual support, and she is well-loved by the rest of her extended family.
Natsuki undergoes significant development throughout the film. She begins as a carefree and somewhat manipulative girl caught up in her own plan, but when faced with real danger and the loss of her great-grandmother, she matures into a determined and courageous leader who puts the needs of her family and the world above her own comfort. She learns to be honest and to take responsibility for her actions.
Her notable abilities include a high level of proficiency in Koi-Koi, which she uses as a core strategy against Love Machine, and physical training from kendo that gives her discipline and focus. However, her greatest strength is her emotional intelligence, her ability to inspire others, and her unwavering spirit in the face of overwhelming odds. She is not technologically skilled, but her courage and perseverance prove essential to overcoming the crisis.
