Kiriha, originally named Ayasakura, is a tsugumomo—a spirit-imbued object—specifically a pure silk kimono obi hand-woven by the Hanamitani group during their founding era. Treated as a family treasure believed to bring prosperity, she was passed down through generations until manifesting for her fifth-generation owner, Nui Hanamitani. Kiriha assisted Nui throughout her life as cloth-sellers, forging a deep bond that lasted until Nui's death at age 105. Refusing to choose a new owner from Nui's relatives, Kiriha fled but was intercepted by exorcist Takigi Tagusari. Guided by Nui's final wishes, Takigi sent her to Tsuzura Temple to partner with an exorcist.
At Tsuzura Temple, cadets initially overlooked Kiriha due to her non-combat nature as an obi, but Kanaka Kagami selected her. Under Kanaka's ownership, Kiriha's appearance matured into that of a young woman, reflecting Kanaka's spiritual power. Kanaka's influence radically altered Kiriha's personality: transforming her from calm and dignified to boisterous, lewd, and prone to violent outbursts. This shift manifested as laziness, a love for video games, and an obsession with sweets—particularly pudding, which she uses as a bargaining tool. Kiriha also adopted Kanaka's unabashed attitude toward sexuality, openly discussing intimate topics, though she reserved such behavior for trusted individuals like Kazuya.
During this partnership, Kiriha participated in exorcist training and missions. A pivotal event involved confronting the Kazenbou aberration that killed Kanaka's family. This battle triggered Kanaka's latent combat prowess and her signature "weaving" techniques, with Kiriha providing tactical support. Eventually, Kanaka grew bored with routine missions, leading them to seek the exorcist post in Kamioka. To claim the position, they dueled the incumbent, Shinkurou Shishizaki, overseen by the local goddess Kukuri. This mission cemented Kiriha's loyalty but exposed her to Kanaka's increasingly dangerous thrill-seeking in combat.
After Kanaka's disappearance, Kiriha became the partner of Kazuya Kagami, Kanaka's son. Bonded to Kazuya, her appearance regressed to a younger form due to his initially lower spiritual power. She developed a complex relationship with him: fiercely protective and loyal, yet frequently subjecting him to physical humor like groin attacks or sleep disturbances, and exploiting his prudishness for amusement. Despite her abrasive demeanor, she demonstrated deep care, risking her life for him multiple times. Their bond enabled a "Divine Possession" fusion, amplifying their abilities but temporarily paralyzing Kazuya afterward. Kiriha also sealed Kazuya's childhood memories to protect him from trauma.
Kiriha's abilities center on "Cloth Fu," leveraging her obi form for combat. She manipulates fabric for offense and defense—creating shields, drills, or restraining tendrils—and can nullify sound or deflect attacks. Her power scales with her owner's spirit energy: under Kanaka, she achieved building-level destructive capability, while with Kazuya, it fluctuated, even regressing to a childlike form after energy depletion. Key techniques include the "Shield Weave" for enhanced durability and the "Fence Weave Inner Court Formation" for high-level protection.
Her rivalry with Kukuri, Kamioka's water goddess, is marked by constant bickering underpinned by mutual respect and past intimacy. Their dynamic shifted when Kanaka, corrupted by an aberration, killed Kukuri and shredded Kiriha. Kiriha survived through a fragment of her obi, later regenerating fully. Kukuri's death left Kiriha emotionally scarred, though hints of Kukuri's potential revival via a residual fragment emerged.
Throughout her existence, Kiriha balances contradictory traits: reckless yet strategic in battle, selfish yet self-sacrificing for loved ones, and shameless yet deeply principled about being treated as a partner rather than a tool. She evolves from a dignified heirloom to a brash warrior, ultimately affirming her core ethos of loyalty and autonomy.
