Description
Kaname Takasato is the human name and form of Taiki, the kirin of the Kingdom of Tai in the Twelve Kingdoms. As a kirin, he is a divine beast tasked with the sacred duty of selecting a mortal to become the king of his kingdom. He is an exceptionally rare black kirin, a Kokki, and is also an immature one, a condition known as heina. Unlike kirin who are born from the sacred trees on Mount Hou, Kaname has a unique origin. His ranka, a spirit seed-like form, was blown across the sea to Japan, known as Hourai in this world, by a magical storm called a shoku. As a result, he was born and raised as a human boy for several years, entirely unaware of his true nature as a divine creature.
Fifteen years before the arrival of the protagonist Youko Nakajima in the Twelve Kingdoms, Kaname was living a difficult life in Japan. He was an awkward and isolated boy who felt he did not fit in with his family or peers. He was eventually discovered by Enki, the kirin of the neighboring Kingdom of En, and brought back to the Twelve Kingdoms to fulfill his role. Upon his return to Mount Hou, Kaname began his education in the ways of a kirin. He was cared for by his nyokai, a mother-like guardian named Haku Sanshi, who was born from a fruit on the same tree as him. One of his initial struggles was an inability to transform back into his natural beast form, a consequence of spending his formative years trapped in a human body.
Kaname's central role is to restore the Kingdom of Tai, which had fallen into ruin after the death of its last king. His defining act is the selection of a new monarch. After much uncertainty and initial terror, he chose a respected general named Gyousou Saku to be the king. This fear is later understood not as a lack of conviction but as Kaname's instinctive recognition of the "aura of the ruler," a quality essential for a true king. It was Gyousou who gave him the affectionate nickname Kouri. Throughout this formative period, Kaname is portrayed as a gentle, earnest, and somewhat timid child. The immense pressure of his duties causes him considerable distress, but he also experiences warmth and belonging for the first time, particularly in his relationships with his dedicated nyokai Sanshi, his powerful toutetsu youma shirei (familiar) named Gouran, and the other kirin like Keiki.
Kaname's story takes a tragic turn during a coup d'état orchestrated by one of Gyousou's dissatisfied men, Asen. In the attack, Asen severed Kaname's horn, the source of a kirin's power. Fleeing the violence, a terrified and mortally wounded Kaname used a forbidden magical path called a meishoku to escape back to Japan. The trauma of this event caused him to lose all memory of his time in the Twelve Kingdoms, and he was forced to live as an ordinary high school student again. For six years, Kaname lived in Japan, slowly losing his kirin nature. The meat he consumed in the human world, which often contained animal products, was poison to him, further weakening his body and spirit. Meanwhile, his shirei in the Twelve Kingdoms, Sanshi and Gouran, were driven wild by his suffering and the severance of their bond. They eventually started appearing in Japan, killing anyone they perceived as a threat to him. This culminated in a horrific event where they slaughtered his abusive human family, believing them to be enemies. In Japan, he became known as a cursed child, shunned and feared by those around him.
This suffering became the catalyst for his final development. His memory and sense of self were eventually restored, and he was rescued through the combined efforts of the kings and kirin of all Twelve Kingdoms. He returned as a resilient young man, no longer a child. Though he had finally matured into a full-fledged kirin during his trials, the loss of his horn was permanent, rendering him without his divine powers or his shirei. Despite his powerlessness, he made the courageous and determined decision to return to his devastated kingdom, Tai, to search for his missing king, Gyousou.
