Description
Korin is the kirin of the kingdom of Kou, one of the divine beasts entrusted with selecting a king for the realm. She chose the previous king of Kou, who reigned before the events of the story. Like all kirin, she is by nature a gentle and peace‑loving creature, but her unwavering loyalty to her king compelled her to act against her own instincts. When the king ordered her to eliminate Youko Nakajima, the newly chosen ruler of Kei, Korin obediently captured Keiki, the kirin of Kei, and placed him under an enchantment that prevented him from speaking, summoning his shirei, or returning to human form. She later carried out repeated attacks on Youko, commanding her spirit servant to assault her and even personally stabbing Youko with a dagger. These actions were a direct violation of the merciful essence of a kirin and reflected the profound conflict between her innate nature and her sense of duty. Korin’s subordination to a ruler who had lost the heavenly mandate eventually led to her suffering from the wasting disease known as shitsudou, the spiritual illness that afflicts a kirin when the king loses the Way. She succumbed to this illness and died, marking the end of her role in the kingdom. As a kirin, she could assume both human and bestial forms and possessed a shirei, a powerful youma that she commanded as an extension of her will. Her key relationships revolved around her king, whom she served without question, and the other kirin she opposed, particularly Keiki and the new queen of Kei. Her story illustrates the tragic consequences of a kirin being forced to abide by a corrupt ruler’s commands.
