Description
Kantai, also known formally as Seishin, is a character from the anime The Twelve Kingdoms who plays a significant role during the uprising against the corrupt rule of Gahou in the kingdom of Kei. He is a hanjyuu, a half-beast, possessing the ability to take the form of a massive and incredibly powerful bear while also maintaining a human appearance. Even in his human form, Kantai demonstrates monstrous strength that far exceeds that of ordinary humans, a trait that makes him a formidable warrior.

His background is tied to a deep sense of loyalty. Kantai serves as the secret general of the province of Baku under his lord, Koukan. In the kingdom of Kei, hanjyuu are often treated as lesser beings, and it was only through Koukan forging his family register that Kantai was able to be appointed as a general. This act of defiance and trust forged an unshakeable bond of loyalty between Kantai and his master. When Koukan is expelled from his position by the tyrannical Gahou, Kantai, acting on his lord's orders, begins preparing a rebellion to expose the corruption plaguing the kingdom and restore proper governance.

In terms of personality, Kantai presents himself initially as a mercenary who seems indifferent and somewhat lazy, with a notable lack of enthusiasm for household chores. However, this facade hides a deep-seated desire to see justice done. He is practical and wary, sometimes doubting the success of certain missions, yet he is also honorable and can be shamed into action when the situation demands it, such as when he is compelled to help save Takuhou from a fire after another character, Koushou, insists on the rescue. His motivations are not driven by personal glory or power, but by loyalty to Koukan and a wish to correct the wrongs done to the people of Kei.

Kantai’s role in the story begins when he rescues Shoukei, a fallen princess, from soldiers who are pursuing her after she threw a stone at Gahou's executioners. Seeing her potential, he involves her in the rebellion, sending her to the intermediate village of Houkaku to deliver touki weapons to the Shisui rebels. As the uprising progresses, Kantai leads his own forces to intervene when he realizes that his allies are about to be wiped out by Gahou. He is a key military leader in the eventual overthrow of the corrupt regime. Following the victory of the new queen, Youko, she offers him any reward he desires. Demonstrating his core motivation, Kantai does not ask for wealth or status for himself, but instead requests a pardon for his exiled lord, Koukan. Youko, recognizing his skill and integrity, subsequently places him in charge of the entire army of Kei.

Key relationships define his journey. His loyalty to Koukan is the cornerstone of his character and the reason for his involvement in the rebellion. His interactions with Shoukei evolve from rescuer and mentor to that of a respected comrade-in-arms. He is also instrumental in aiding Koushou, another rebel leader, despite his personal misgivings about the tactics. After the establishment of the new regime, Kantai develops a relationship with Queen Youko, built on mutual respect; he often spars with her as a method of stress relief while also diligently working to build a trustworthy new royal guard from the common people.

Kantai’s development sees him transition from a secretive subordinate acting on his lord's orders to a prominent and respected leader in his own right. He moves from the shadows of a provincial rebellion to the head of a kingdom's entire military. His abilities are almost exclusively physical and martial. As a hanjyuu bear, his individual combat power is immense, described as far surpassing that of humans. In one notable display of strength, he transforms into his bear form and single-handedly stops a line of thirteen or more fortified carriages, toppling them all at once. This raw power, combined with his tactical acumen and deep-seated honor, makes him one of the most effective and reliable warriors in the kingdom.
