Description
Abel Lanzard is a character from the fourth season of the Slayers anime, Slayers Evolution-R, who also appears in the original light novel series. He is the son of Radok Lanzard, a wealthy and influential merchant from the city of Vezendi.

Abel has a slender build and blue hair. On the surface, he presents himself as a sarcastic, ill-tempered, and often insolent young man. He is openly rude and argumentative, frequently clashing with his father and showing blatant disdain for Lina Inverse and her companions when they are hired as bodyguards. He makes numerous attempts to criticize and drive them away, giving the impression of a spoiled and distrustful son who believes Lina is merely a con artist trying to exploit his father's wealth.

This abrasive personality, however, is a deliberate facade. Abel’s true motivation is a desperate and protective one: he has long been aware that his father leads a double life as the deadly assassin Zuuma. Knowing that Zuuma has set his sights on killing Lina, Abel tries to force her and her friends to leave Vezendi. He hopes that by driving them away, he can prevent his father from engaging them in a fatal battle, thereby saving both Lina and his father from a tragic outcome.

In Slayers Evolution-R, Abel's role is central to the conflict between Lina and Zuuma. After Lina is hired by Radok, Abel goes out of his way to be unpleasant and obstructive, but his true feelings become clear when he interrupts a critical battle between Lina and the masked assassin. In a desperate plea, he calls Zuuma "father," revealing their secret relationship to Lina and begging his father to stop fighting. This revelation is the culmination of his efforts, as his primary goal throughout the story has been to prevent this very confrontation.

His relationship with his father, Radok, is the emotional core of his character. While they frequently argue and appear at odds, Abel’s actions are driven by a deep-seated love and a desire to protect his father from his own murderous path. Unlike in the original novel, where his intervention causes Zuuma to hesitate and leads to a different outcome, the anime adaptation of Evolution-R ends in tragedy. When Abel steps forward to stop the fight, a cold and determined Zuuma kills his own son without hesitation to remove the distraction. His death serves as a pivotal, somber moment in the story.

As the son of a merchant, Abel does not possess any magical abilities or special combat skills. His strengths lie in his observational skills, having deduced his father's secret identity on his own, and in his willingness to use psychological tactics to try and alter the course of events. His power is purely emotional, derived from his desperate love for his father and his ultimately futile attempt to change fate.
