Description
Nene is the primary antagonist of the anime Blue Dragon. He belongs to a race of humanoids called the Ancients and serves as the ruler of the Gran Kingdom. From a mobile air fortress enveloped by purple clouds, he travels across the world spreading destruction and chaos, with the ultimate aim of achieving world domination. His outward appearance is that of an old man, a consequence of his own magical prowess. His deep mastery over magic caused a severe illness that accelerated his aging, and much of his scheming stems from his desire to reverse this condition.

In terms of personality, Nene is calculating, manipulative, and entirely self-serving. He orchestrates events from behind the scenes, demonstrating patience and strategic thinking. He is willing to cause widespread suffering, including the destruction of villages and the capture of children, to further his plans. Despite his advanced age and frail appearance, he is exceedingly dangerous, both intellectually and in combat.

His role in the story is that of the main villain. In the anime, he operates an artificial shadow machine that requires the energy of captured children to function. He initially overpowers the young protagonists but is later revealed to be a descendant of the legendary Soldiers of Light, a detail that ties his personal history to the larger conflict. His motivations are twofold: to dominate the world and to cure his own magical illness. To this end, he manipulates events so that Shu, Jiro, Kluke, and Marumaro acquire light spheres and develop their shadow powers, intending to later absorb that power to forge a stronger soul and halt his deterioration. In the anime, he eventually merges with his own shadow and his frog-like companion Deathroy, but is ultimately destroyed by Shu and the Blue Dragon.

Key relationships include his bond with Deathroy, a small frog-like creature that is chained to his shoulder. In the anime, Deathroy is the actual owner of the Chimera shadow, but Nene controls and manipulates it. Nene also has a complex relationship with the protagonists, whom he views as tools for his own salvation. He offers Shu the chance to become his successor when faced with defeat, an offer that is refused.

Notable abilities set Nene apart from other shadow users. He can fight effectively without summoning his shadow, levitate and suspend himself in midair, and evade energy-based attacks. His most formidable power is the ability to absorb the shadow energies of others, increasing his own strength tenfold. This absorption is central to his plan to cure his aging. His own shadow, Chimera, is a red dragon-like creature with orange hair and bird-like wings. In the game version, Chimera originally appears as a red variant of Blue Dragon but later transforms after absorbing the light spheres, adopting features from the other shadows. In the anime, Chimera is controlled by Nene through Deathroy. Nene's immense magical skill, while the source of his power, is also the cause of his physical decline, driving his desperate and ruthless actions throughout the series.
