Description
Isao Shinjou is a character from the eighth film in the Detective Conan series. He is introduced as a 28-year-old theater actor. Professionally, he is a member of a theatrical company putting on a play titled Josephine, in which he performs the role of Hippolyte Charles. His personal connection to the central conflict of the story is that he is identified as the boyfriend of the famous actress Juri Maki, who is the target of a heist notice from the phantom thief Kaito Kid.

On the surface, Shinjou is presented as a suspect in the death of Juri Maki, who is poisoned during a flight to Hakodate. However, his true role in the narrative is far more significant. Following an incident on the aircraft that incapacitates the pilots, Shinjou steps forward to reveal that he possesses piloting skills, taking command of the plane's controls to prevent a disaster. During this emergency, he designates Conan Edogawa, a young detective, as his assistant in the cockpit, establishing a temporary but crucial partnership under extreme pressure.

The character's most defining narrative function is revealed to be a deception. The person presenting himself as Isao Shinjou is not the real actor. The actual Shinjou had remained at Maki's villa in Hakodate with the intention of surprising the cast and crew. The individual on the airplane, who claims to be Shinjou and takes over the flight, is ultimately exposed as Kaito Kid in disguise. This revelation recontextualizes his actions; his apparent piloting ability is derived from Kid's own considerable skills, and his role in the investigation shifts from a potential culprit to the disguised master thief orchestrating events from within.

Through this disguise, Shinjou as portrayed by Kid demonstrates notable abilities. He exhibits the capacity to pilot a commercial aircraft under duress and works alongside Conan to manage a critical emergency. His key relationship in the story is this adversarial yet cooperative dynamic with Conan, as the detective works to uncover the truth of his identity while needing his help to save the passengers. The development of the character known as Isao Shinjou is therefore a dual revelation: first, he appears as a possible murder suspect, then as an unexpected hero, and finally as the secret identity of Kaito Kid, whose motivations throughout the film center on the jewel known as the Jewel of Destiny but who is ultimately forced to act to save lives.
