Description
Juri Maki is a central character in the eighth Detective Conan film. She is a 37-year-old woman who works as a famous stage actress, known for playing the lead role in the play Josephine. Before her career in theater, she used to work for an airline as a pilot or flight attendant, a fact that becomes relevant during the story's climax. At the beginning of the narrative, Juri Maki approaches the private detective Kogoro Mori to protect a valuable ring she possesses, the Jewel of Destiny, a star sapphire that represents faith, hope, and fate, which she fears will be stolen by the phantom thief Kaitou Kid.

As an established and powerful figure in the theatrical world, Juri Maki's personality is marked by a sense of control and a tendency to exert her influence over those around her. Although the director Toru Ban was the one who originally made her a star, she has been giving the directorial orders since her very first day on stage. She is not afraid to use her power to manipulate situations to her advantage, such as blocking the career opportunities of her make-up artist, Natsuki Sakai, by preventing her from taking a job in Hollywood. This behavior extends to how she treats her personal and professional acquaintances. She has a habit of humiliating her manager in public and assigning assistant-type duties to her make-up artist, actions that create significant resentment.

Her personal relationships are complex and troubled. She was previously married to her fellow actor Bunjiro Narusawa, but they divorced three years prior to the events of the film. Despite the divorce, Narusawa still harbors strong romantic feelings for her and hopes for a reconciliation. At the time of the story, her lover is another actor, Isao Shinjo, though there are indications that she has begun to grow tired of him, adding to the list of people who might have a motive against her.

Juri Maki's role in the story is twofold. Initially, she is the client who hires Kogoro Mori to protect her jewel, setting the stage for a confrontation with Kaitou Kid. Her famous sapphire ring is the target of the magician thief's heist, which takes place during a performance of her play. Later, her role shifts dramatically when she becomes the victim of a murder investigation. While on a flight from Tokyo to Hakodate to perform in another show, she suddenly collapses and dies after eating a chocolate. Her death is the central mystery of the second half of the film. An autopsy later confirms she was killed by a cyanide poison. The murder investigation reveals that several people on the plane had a motive to kill her, including her ex-husband, her lover, her manager, and her director, all of whom she has mistreated in some way.

The resolution of the case reveals her key relationship with her make-up artist, Natsuki Sakai, who is ultimately unmasked as her murderer. Natsuki had long harbored a deep grudge, as Juri had repeatedly used her influence in the theater industry to sabotage Natsuki's chances of becoming a make-up artist in Hollywood. Juri Maki does not undergo personal development during the course of the film, as her death occurs relatively early. However, the investigation into her murder reveals significant details about her past and personality, providing the development for other characters like Conan and the audience's understanding of the events. Her story ends with her tragic death, which serves as the catalyst for the plane's subsequent emergency.

In terms of notable abilities, Juri Maki is a highly successful and influential stage actress. Beyond her acting career, she is also a certified pilot, having previously worked for an airline, a skill that is acknowledged by the pilots who know her on the flight. Additionally, she had recently taken up scuba diving as a hobby, which is a minor detail noted by others in the story. Her most infamous, and ultimately fatal, personal habit is her tendency to lick her fingers after eating chocolates, a specific detail that plays a crucial role in how the poison was administered and how the murder was solved.
