Keiko Toda

Description
Keiko Toda is a highly regarded Japanese actress and voice actor, born on September 12, 1957, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Her career in entertainment began in childhood, and she initially moved to Tokyo as a teenager with aspirations of becoming a singer. Although her singing career did not initially take off, she transitioned to stage acting, which laid a strong foundation for her future work in both voice acting and on-screen roles.

Toda's entry into voice acting came in 1979 when sound director Noriyoshi Matsuura recognized her vocal talent and recruited her for the anime Mobile Suit Gundam. Her performance as Matilda Ajan in this landmark series marked the beginning of a prolific voice acting career. She soon took on other memorable roles in early robot anime, such as Karala Ajiba in Space Runaway Ideon.

The 1980s saw Toda establish herself as a leading voice actor with several iconic parts. She became the second voice actor to play the titular yokai boy in Gegege no Kitaro (1985 series), a role she continued in various films of that era. She also voiced Hitomi Kisugi, one of the three titular sisters, in the popular series Cat's Eye. Another significant role from this period was Hajime Amamori in Queen Millennia.

However, Toda's most defining and enduring role began in 1988 when she became the voice of the protagonist in the long-running children's anime Soreike! Anpanman. She has voiced the bread-headed hero Anpanman for decades, appearing in countless television episodes and theatrical films, making her voice a beloved staple for generations of Japanese children. The character is so closely associated with her that it is considered her signature role.

Throughout her career, Toda has demonstrated remarkable versatility, taking on a wide array of characters. Her range extends from the gentle hero Anpanman to the cool and determined Hitomi in Cat's Eye, and from the young boy Kitaro to the elegant Oscar François de Jarjayes in a film adaptation of The Rose of Versailles. She has also voiced characters in major film franchises, such as Osono the baker in Kiki's Delivery Service and Sally Carrera in the Japanese dubs of the Cars films. Her work is not limited to anime; she was also the long-standing Japanese voice of Thomas the Tank Engine in Thomas & Friends from its first season through its eighth. In the 2020s, she continues to take on new anime roles, such as Teatine in Healin' Good Precure.

Beyond her original anime roles, Toda is an in-demand voice actor for dubbing foreign films and television series. She is particularly well-known as the regular Japanese dubbing voice for actresses like Jodie Foster and Julia Roberts, as well as for providing voices for characters played by Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Toda's contributions to her craft have been widely recognized. In 2012, she was honored with the Kazue Takahashi Award at the 6th Seiyu Awards, which celebrates voice actors who have made significant achievements in the field. This award is a testament to her lasting impact and excellence in voice acting. In addition to her voice work, she has also had a successful career as an on-screen actress, winning a Japanese Academy Award for her supporting role in the 1997 film Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald. Her work in both anime and live-action demonstrates her broad talent and enduring presence in the Japanese entertainment industry.
