TV-Series
Description
Ataru's mother is a middle-aged Japanese housewife and the parent of the protagonist, Ataru Moroboshi. She and her husband form a fairly typical, lower-middle-class couple living in the town of Tomobiki, perpetually dealing with the financial and emotional strain brought on by their son's chaotic life. Neither she nor her husband are ever given proper names in the series, remaining in the background as a constant, if exasperated, presence in the Moroboshi household.
Her personality is defined by a sharp, high-strung, and frequently exasperated demeanor. She is a vocal critic of her son, often loudly lamenting her fate as his mother and using harsh, verbally abusive catchphrases like "I wish I never had him" directly to Ataru's face, particularly in the early parts of the story. This behavior stems from her deep embarrassment over his lecherous nature and his tendency to draw supernatural and alien trouble to their doorstep, which she feels makes her unpopular with the neighbors. Despite her constant nagging and frustration, her underlying motivation is that of a weary parent who genuinely cares for her family's stability. Although she frequently insults her son, she is genuinely upset at the thought of losing him and has been shown bursting into tears when believing he has died. She also maintains a quiet, loving, and non-dramatic relationship with her husband, often calling him by affectionate terms despite their occasional bickering.
In the story, her primary role is to serve as a foil to Ataru's wild behavior and a representation of ordinary domestic life constantly under siege by the extraterrestrial chaos that Lum brings. She is the one who cooks, cleans, and manages the household, often while her husband hides behind his newspaper and hopes the insanity will stop. Her role extends to being a key participant in the family's perpetual financial worries, as the repeated destruction of their home by various alien conflicts makes her husband fret over their mortgage payments.
Her most significant relationship is with her son, Ataru, which is a complex mixture of deep shame and underlying maternal affection. While she showers him with verbal abuse, she also treats Lum, his alien fiancée, with the adoration of the daughter she always wished she had, a fact that visibly irritates Ataru. Her relationship with her husband is more passive; she bosses him around frequently while he sits passively, attempting to ignore the household's turmoil. A notable and unusual development in her character occurs when she develops a short-lived crush on Rei, a handsome but simple-minded alien who is around her son's age. This infatuation, which plays into the Mrs. Robinson archetype, causes her husband considerable despair.
As a character, she shows minor development through her interactions with the alien cast. Beyond her crush on Rei, she and her husband have demonstrated a pragmatic agenda when it comes to their son's future. In the film Only You, they join forces with Lum's parents to force Ataru into a proper marriage with the alien princess, motivated by the promise of a better, more luxurious life for themselves on Lum's homeworld. This reveals that despite her traditional housewife persona, she is not above using her son's bizarre situation for personal gain. Ataru's mother possesses no supernatural abilities. Her notable skills are those of a stereotypical housewife: she is a strong-willed homemaker capable of enduring immense stress, taking care of a useless husband and a troublesome son, and maintaining a household despite its frequent demolition.
