Description
Anpanman is the central hero of the film Soreike! Anpanman Roboly to Pokapoka Present. His origin is a magical one, having been brought to life when a "star of life" shooting star fell into the oven of the baker Uncle Jam while he was making an anpan, a sweet bread bun filled with red bean paste. This event gave him the form of a superhero with an anpan for a head. His very creation is rooted in the experiences of his creator, who endured severe food shortages and dreamed of eating anpan, transforming Anpanman into a powerful symbol of nourishment and hope.

Anpanman's personality is defined by his boundless happiness, friendliness, and selfless dedication to helping others. He is always ready to fly to the aid of anyone in need, whether fighting a villain, finding a lost pet, or pushing a heavy cart. The core of his heroic motivation is the profound fulfillment he finds in bringing smiles to the faces of those he saves. This altruism is most dramatically expressed in his willingness to tear off a piece of his own anpan head to feed a starving creature or person, an act that severely weakens him but one he performs without hesitation. This concept of justice through self-sacrifice is a fundamental part of his character.

Within the story of Roboly to Pokapoka Present, Anpanman acts as a protector and a gentle guide. When the robot girl Roboly arrives in his world searching for an "important thing" she cannot create, Anpanman and his friends welcome her. At one point, Anpanman and his closest allies, Shokupanman and Currypanman, are unexpectedly turned into infants by Baikinman's "Baby Spray," and Roboly must care for them. Throughout her time with him, Roboly feels a warm sensation in her chest, a new emotion she begins to understand through her interactions with Anpanman. While Roboly searches for the owner of a music box, the villain Baikinman creates a powerful mecha called Roboking to take over Roboly's home, Comet Robo. Anpanman leads the effort to protect Comet Robo, showcasing his role as a guardian who fights for the well-being of others, even in a world he has just discovered.

Key relationships are central to Anpanman's existence. He lives in the bakery with his paternal creator, Uncle Jam, who bakes him a fresh new head whenever his current one is damaged, restoring his strength. He is also close with Batako-san, Uncle Jam's assistant who repairs his flying cape. His loyal dog, Cheese, was rescued by Anpanman when he shared his head with the starving puppy. He fights alongside his fellow bread-based heroes, the hot-tempered Currypanman and the earnest Shokupanman. His persistent arch-nemesis is Baikinman, an anthropomorphic germ who constantly plots evil schemes, such as creating the Roboking mecha. Even so, Anpanman maintains an underlying willingness to see good in his foe.

While Anpanman is a static symbol of goodness who does not undergo a personal arc of change in this film, his presence is the catalyst for development in others. Specifically, it is through spending time with Anpanman and witnessing his unwavering kindness and heroic spirit that the robot girl Roboly learns about the intangible, "important thing" she was searching for: the warmth of emotion and friendship. He represents an ideal that others aspire to and learn from.

Anpanman possesses several notable abilities. His signature attacks are the An-punch and An-kick, super-strong strikes capable of shattering metal and sending huge robots flying. He can fly through the air using his brown cape. He also has super hearing, allowing him to hear anyone who calls his name in distress from anywhere in the world. His greatest vulnerability is his head; water, dirt, mold, or physical damage will weaken him, and pulling off parts to feed others drains his power. To protect his head from rain or when underwater, he wears a transparent, bubble-like helmet. If his head is too damaged or his strength is depleted, Uncle Jam can bake him a replacement head. Once the new head is in place, the old, weakened head flies off, and Anpanman is instantly restored to full power. If his cape is torn, he loses the ability to fly until Batako-san repairs it.
