Description
Kotaru Mochizuki is a central character in the Black Blood Brothers anime. He appears as a young boy with short blonde hair and blue eyes, typically dressed in Victorian-inspired clothing. He is the younger brother of Jiro Mochizuki, and the two are the last remaining members of a special vampire bloodline known as the Sage Eve bloodline.
Kotaru does not exhibit typical vampire powers such as the Hide Hand, a form of telekinesis common among older vampires. However, he possesses an extraordinary tolerance for pain, often being thrown into walls or the ground without sustaining injury. Unlike his brother, Kotaru is not harmed by sunlight or holy water, which leads other characters to question the nature of their relationship. Despite these differences, Kotaru consistently affirms that he and Jiro are brothers bound by bloodline.
Personality wise, Kotaru is depicted as laid-back, sociable, and cheerful, in contrast to the more serious and burdened demeanor of his brother. Yet he also carries a quiet worry, perhaps stemming from his mysterious origins and the dangers that surround him. He speaks with a manner similar to Alice Eve, Jiro’s former lover, which adds to the narrative mystery surrounding his identity.
Kotaru’s role in the story is pivotal. Unknown to himself at first, he is revealed to be the reincarnation of Alice Eve, the founder of the Sage Eve bloodline. During the Hong Kong Crusade, Alice entrusted her blood and memories to Jiro before dying, and Kotaru now serves as the vessel for that departed soul. Jiro’s ultimate purpose is to protect Kotaru and eventually return Alice’s blood and memories to him, a process that will cause Jiro to fade away. This destiny drives much of the plot, as the journey to the Special Zone and the encounters with the surviving Kowloon Children all circle around the need to safeguard Kotaru.
The most significant relationship in Kotaru’s life is with his brother Jiro. Their bond is deep, but complicated by Jiro’s lingering grief for Alice and the knowledge of his impending sacrifice. Kotaru also forms a close, trusting friendship with the human mediator Mimiko Katsuragi, who becomes a protector and a potential ally for him after Jiro’s eventual disappearance. Additionally, Kotaru’s striking resemblance to Alice affects how others from Jiro’s past, such as Cassandra Jill Warlock, perceive and interact with him.
Over the course of the anime, Kotaru develops from a seemingly innocent, carefree child into a character more aware of the weight he carries. As the truth about his connection to Alice emerges, he begins to understand Jiro’s pain and the sacrifices that have been made for him. His growth is tied to accepting his own identity and the role he must play in the coming events.
Notable abilities include his physical resilience, apparent immunity to common vampire weaknesses, and an unconfirmed latent connection to the sage’s blood that may grant power beyond ordinary vampires. Though not overtly powerful in a conventional sense, his very existence is the linchpin of the story’s central conflict.
