Description
Fritz Lang, who also uses the alias Mabuse, is a fictionalized version of the real-life Austrian filmmaker. He appears as a significant supporting character in the 2005 film. Residing in Berlin in 1923, Lang is a Jewish filmmaker working in the German film industry. He is notably the parallel world counterpart of King Bradley, also known as Pride, from the 2003 anime series, and bears a strong physical resemblance to the homunculus, including wearing a monocle over his left eye.
Initially, Lang encounters Edward Elric after the young man notices his likeness to Bradley and follows him through Munich. When confronted, Lang displays a calm, almost weary demeanor, attributing his lack of surprise to being a Jew accustomed to harassment from nationalist "patriots". Rather than being antagonistic, he reveals an interest in a local legend about a dragon, which he believes will inspire his next film. This search leads him and Edward to investigate an abandoned castle, where they discover Envy in its dragon form.
Lang’s personality is defined by a sense of detached observation. While he possesses information about the rising Nazi Party and their dangerous plans, he confesses to Edward that he chooses not to act, preferring to avoid the grim reality of the political situation. He claims he monitors the Nazis primarily because of his wife’s interest in them, adopting a passive role as an observer of history rather than a participant. This fatalistic attitude causes a rift between him and Edward, who angrily accuses him of acting as though he is too good for the world.
Despite this professed detachment, Lang repeatedly aids Edward. He provides crucial information, such as showing Edward a photograph of a uranium bomb that had passed through the Gate, and later rescues him from a beer hall surrounded by Nazi Party members by crashing his car into the building. In a more direct act of assistance, Lang pilots a plane to fly Edward over the Thule Society’s factory, allowing him to parachute onto the site to confront them. At the film’s conclusion, as the Nazis are rounded up following the failed Beer Hall Putsch, Lang remarks that another conflict is inevitable and that he will be there to film it.
Lang shares a key relationship with Edward, serving as a mentor figure and ally who provides transportation and information, though their philosophical differences create tension. He is also friends with Karl Haushofer, a member of the Thule Society, which gives him access to certain circles. Under his alias Mabuse, taken from the master criminal character in his own films, Lang exhibits a talent for deception and mind games, a trait that mirrors that of his homunculus counterpart, Pride. Beyond his skills as a filmmaker, Lang demonstrates notable resourcefulness, including piloting an aircraft and providing Edward with a pistol for their initial investigation of the castle.
