Description
Dietlinde Eckhart is the main antagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist film Conqueror of Shamballa. She is a German-born woman who serves as the chairperson of the Thule Society, an occultist group operating in Munich during the Weimar Republic era following World War I. Little is known about her past, which contributes to her mysterious and enigmatic nature throughout the story. Her character appears to be based on the historical figure Dietrich Eckhart, a real-life member of the Thule Society and an early supporter of Adolf Hitler.
At the start of the film, Dietlinde Eckhart presents herself as a level-headed and soft-spoken individual who is highly respected within the Thule Society. She holds radical visions for the future of her troubled country, which is suffering from political upheaval and the economic consequences of the Treaty of Versailles. Underneath her calm exterior, she harbors a cruel and ambitious side, showing no remorse for her actions, such as shooting people without hesitation or callously allowing her captive Hohenheim to be tormented by the homunculus Envy. Her true nature is ultimately self-serving; while she claims to want to restore Germany to greatness, her primary goal is personal power, and she is disloyal to her nominal Führer, planning to overthrow him after achieving her aims.
Eckhart is a firm believer in the existence of a parallel world, which she calls Shamballa, and she is convinced that this other dimension possesses powerful magical weapons (which are in fact alchemy) that can be harnessed to help the Nazi Party take control of Germany. Her ultimate motivation is to conquer Shamballa, believing that the people of that world are stronger and will inevitably invade her own if she does not strike first. However, after she successfully travels to the other side, her psychological welfare escalates into complete insanity, and her goal shifts from conquest to the total eradication of all life in the other world, driven by her paranoia and fear of the uncontrollable power she witnesses.
In her role as the primary antagonist, Eckhart drives the plot of Conqueror of Shamballa by leading the Thule Society's efforts to open a portal to the other world. Upon learning that Hohenheim of Light, Edward Elric's father, comes from this parallel dimension and possesses great knowledge of alchemy, she has him kidnapped and forces him to work as an unwilling advisor. She also orchestrates the capture of the homunculus Envy in his dragon form, intending to use him as a catalyst to open the Gate. She enlists the help of a Roma woman named Noah to read Edward Elric's mind to find a way into Shamballa. Furthermore, she utilizes the rocket technology developed by Alfons Heiderich, the counterpart of Alphonse Elric in her world, to create a fleet of aircraft powerful enough to pass through the Gate.
Key relationships define Eckhart's interactions with other characters. She views Hohenheim solely as a tool to be exploited for his knowledge, showing him no respect or compassion. Her relationship with Envy is similarly pragmatic, using the creature's power as a means to an end while keeping him pacified by allowing him to torment Hohenheim. She approaches Noah as a useful instrument, exploiting the young woman's desperate situation despite the prejudiced nature of German society at the time. Her relationship with Edward Elric is one of direct conflict, culminating in a confrontation aboard her warship where she confesses her actions are driven by fear of the power she cannot control.
Throughout the story, Eckhart undergoes a significant and horrifying physical and mental development. When she first passes through the Gate, she experiences a severe physical mutation, and the ethereal beings known as the Gate children bond with her armor. This mutation grants her the ability to fully use alchemy at will, a power she did not possess before. This new ability, combined with the trauma of her passage, drives her to full-blown insanity. After her defeat by the Elric brothers and her forced return to her own world, her transformation becomes even more grotesque; she becomes completely unrecognizable, with a black miasma from the Gate covering her entire body and altering her voice to be neither definitively male nor female. In this monstrous state, her sanity is completely gone, and she desperately demands to be sent back to Shamballa before she is shot and killed by the parallel world version of Maes Hughes, at which point she reverts to her human form.
Dietlinde Eckhart possesses a few notable abilities. Initially, she has a minor, cursory knowledge of alchemy, which she and her society refer to as magic. After being mutated by the Gate children during her crossing into the world of Amestris, she gains the full ability to perform alchemy at will, which she uses to devastating effect, including levitating a large transmutation circle in the air and commanding a massive aerial warship. As the chairperson of the Thule Society, she also holds significant political and social influence, commanding a loyal following and the resources necessary to launch a military expedition into another dimension.
