Description
Hugues - Hohenheim, who appears in Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa, is the parallel world counterpart of Van Hohenheim from the original television series. In the film’s setting of post-World War I Germany, he is a soldier struggling to find his place in a defeated and economically devastated nation. Desperate for stability and purpose, he is drawn into the burgeoning Nazi movement, genuinely believing that its promise of restoring Germany’s honor and prosperity is the right path forward. This conviction creates a central source of conflict, putting him directly at odds with Edward Elric, who has witnessed the darker implications of such ideologies from a different perspective. Unlike the distant and ancient alchemist from the series, this version of Hohenheim is a man of his time, shaped by the desperation and political upheaval of 1920s Europe. His role in the story is primarily as an antagonist representing the tragic consequences of a society seduced by extremism, serving as a foil to the series’ protagonists by embodying a path born from despair rather than hope. His relationship with Edward is defined by this ideological clash, as the two characters come from shared origins yet stand on opposite sides of a growing conflict. The film provides a limited exploration of his inner development, instead using his situation to reflect the film’s broader themes of duality, history repeating itself, and the struggle to discern right from wrong during turbulent times. He does not possess any supernatural alchemical abilities, as the film’s other world is largely devoid of such powers, leaving him as a regular human defined by his choices and convictions rather than any extraordinary skills.
