Description
In the film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa, Alphonse "Al" Elric is portrayed as a young alchemist who has regained his original human body following the events of the 2003 anime series. He is physically thirteen years old during the film, appearing with dark golden hair and gentle brown eyes, and wearing a black jacket and trousers reminiscent of his older brother Edward's typical attire, complete with white gloves bearing alchemical symbols on the palms.
Alphonse's personality stands in notable contrast to his older brother. He is characterized as calm, introverted, thoughtful, and well-mannered, often serving as a mediator who must temper Edward's more impulsive and hotheaded nature. He possesses a highly empathetic and amiable disposition, showing genuine sweetness and an almost unfailing politeness toward others. However, his strong capacity for empathy can make him trusting, and his dislike of conflict means he is sometimes willing to let those he cares about get away with things. Despite this, he has a firmly codified moral sense and will consistently choose what he believes is right over personal benefit. While he generally avoids fighting on his own behalf, he readily rises to defend other people.
The film finds Alphonse in a unique situation. Having lost his memories of the five years his soul was bound to a suit of armor, he is essentially experiencing life in his physical body again without that traumatic recollection. This amnesia leaves him vulnerable in certain ways, as he cannot remember the consequences of past decisions. Nevertheless, he has continued to study alchemy diligently, driven by a singular motivation: to find a way to reunite with his missing brother Edward.
In the story, Alphonse takes an active role as a determined seeker. He ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in his own world while Edward is trapped in an alternate reality (1920s Munich). His actions are central to the plot, as he ultimately finds a way to open the gate between the two worlds with the help of the homunculus Wrath, leading to the film's climax. His key relationships remain focused on his brother, and he demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice his own comfort and safety for Edward, ultimately choosing to follow him into the unknown rather than be separated again.
Regarding his abilities, Alphonse is a skilled alchemist. Since he cannot perform transmutations without a circle like his brother can, he uses specially prepared gloves with transmutation circles embroidered on the palms to perform alchemy on the fly. He is also a capable hand-to-hand fighter, having received martial arts training. Throughout the film, his character develops from an amnesiac boy searching for his lost sibling to someone who recovers his past and actively chooses his future alongside his brother in a strange new world, demonstrating significant personal resolve and maturity.
