Description
Hironari Kusaka is a character who appears exclusively in the ninth film of the Detective Conan series. He is a 26-year-old man working as a scriptwriter or author, engaged in writing a novel around the time the story takes place. Physically, he is an adult male with brown hair that reaches his shoulders and black eyes.

The roots of Kusaka’s actions lie in a tragedy that occurred nearly fifteen years before the events of the film. His father was a third mate on a cargo ship owned by the Yashiro Trading Company. Before the ship sank, Kusaka’s father was murdered on the orders of the company’s president. This deep-seated need for revenge becomes the driving force behind his motivations.

During the maiden voyage of the luxury liner Saint Aphrodite, Kusaka presents himself as a fellow passenger, interacting with Kogoro Mouri and his group. He is often seen in the company of Minako Akiyoshi, the ship’s lead engineer. Behind this calm facade, however, he is actively plotting against the Yashiro family. He breaks into the presidential suite to plant listening devices to monitor the schedules of the president and his daughter. He subsequently confronts President Yashiro in the ship’s marina, where he attacks him and forces him through an open hatch into the ocean.

Initially, all evidence points to Kusaka as the mastermind behind the incident. He goes to great lengths to establish an alibi, using a tape recorder to simulate a live phone conversation with Minako Akiyoshi while he carries out his attack. His plan also involves planting a bomb on the ship. In the course of his scheme, he also knocks Sonoko Suzuki unconscious and locks her in a cold storage room. Despite these calculated actions, his plot unravels when Conan Edogawa exposes his alibi as a fabrication. Kusaka then flees the ship in a motorboat, leading to a chase where he is subdued by Conan’s tranquilizer dart.

Kusaka’s role in the story is complex, as he is ultimately revealed to be both a perpetrator and a victim. While he actively commits crimes, he is being expertly manipulated by Minako Akiyoshi, the true culprit who uses his revenge plot as a cover for her own murders. In this sense, Kusaka is a tragic figure, an unwitting pawn driven by a personal vendetta stemming from the loss of his father. He is depicted as a good person who becomes a villain, and his pitiful situation highlights how he was used by another. Regarding his notable abilities, Kusaka demonstrates a capacity for strategic planning, from creating an alibi to planting surveillance and explosives. He is also shown to be physically capable, as he engages in a violent struggle with President Yashiro. His professional background as a screenwriter directly facilitates his method for creating his false alibi. At the conclusion of the film, Kusaka is taken into police custody.
