Description
Kyosuke Date is the protagonist of the anime The SoulTaker. Initially known as Kyosuke Tokisaka, his life is irrevocably altered when he is stabbed in the heart by his adoptive mother, Mio Date. This act of violence, rather than ending his life, awakens his dormant nature as a mutant. He rises from death with a new identity and a terrible power, becoming the being known as the SoulTaker. His entire past is revealed to be a fabrication, a constructed life that masks his true origins.
In terms of personality, Kyosuke is defined by a serious and determined disposition. Despite the horrifying circumstances of his awakening and the constant danger he faces, he is described as kind-hearted, generous, and selfless. He is not an anti-hero driven by revenge but rather a young man motivated by a deep-seated need to find his long-lost fraternal twin sister, Runa Tokisaka. His search for Runa is the central driving force of his journey, as he seeks to uncover the secrets of his family and his own existence.
Throughout the series, Kyosuke finds himself caught between multiple hostile forces. He is relentlessly pursued by the Hospital, a group of mutant doctors and nurses led by his own biological father, Richard Vincent. Simultaneously, he is a target of the Kirihara Corporation, another powerful organization with its own malevolent interest in his sister and her abilities. In his quest, he gains crucial allies. He is aided by the mysterious swordsman Shiro Mibu and, most significantly, by a mutant nurse named Komugi Nakahara, who betrays the Hospital due to her strong romantic feelings for him.
The core of Kyosuke's journey is his relationship with his sister, Runa. He can communicate and resonate telepathically with her and the Flickers, which are fragmented manifestations of her soul. Runa, who appears as a five-year-old child but is in fact seventeen, serves as a primary antagonist, having been traumatized by their mother’s attempt to kill her in a similar manner to awaken her powers. Kyosuke's development culminates in his final confrontation with Runa. Rather than destroying her, he uses his newfound abilities to experience and understand the pain of her past, ultimately convincing her that their mother’s violent act was a twisted form of protection meant to ensure her survival. In a final act of brotherly protection, he absorbs Runa into his own body, vowing to keep her safe from all harm.
As a mutant, Kyosuke's primary and most notable ability is his transformation into the immensely powerful and dangerous winged entity known as the SoulTaker. In this form, he can perform powerful attacks such as the Lightning Breaker, which unleashes a devastating energy blast, and the Sonic Cross, which can trap an opponent within a phase-space warp in the shape of a giant crucifix. A later iteration of the character appears in the comedic spin-off series Nurse Witch Komugi, where he is reimagined as a seventeen-year-old actor and pop singer who maintains a heroic public persona, a stark contrast to the dark, tormented figure of the original story.
