Description
Mukkuru is a large feline creature introduced in the world of Utawarerumono as the young offspring of Mutikapa, a powerful tiger goddess who once terrorized the forest near the village of Yamayura. After Mutikapa is killed in self‑defense by Hakuowlo and the villagers, Aruruu discovers the orphaned cub and takes it in, naming it Mukkuru. She raises him as her own, and he quickly comes to regard her and her family as his pack. Mukkuru grows at an extraordinary rate, reaching adult size within only a few weeks, yet he retains the playful, affectionate mindset of a cub throughout his life.
In terms of personality, Mukkuru is gentle, sweet‑tempered, and deeply loyal. He is almost always seen at Aruruu’s side and shows a constant, cheerful eagerness for food, often eating large quantities. Aruruu’s motherly guidance helps keep his appetite in check. Despite his formidable size and the fierce appearance he inherits from his mother, Mukkuru behaves much like an oversized housecat when not in danger, enjoying play and close contact with those he trusts. He is described as a big softie at heart. However, when battle arises, he becomes a ferocious and reliable combatant, using his massive body and natural strength to protect his companions.
His primary motivation is his bond with Aruruu, whom he considers both his best friend and his mother. This relationship defines his role in the story: he serves as Aruruu’s constant companion, her mount in battle, and a protective guardian for the entire group. He is fiercely loyal to her and, by extension, to Hakuowlo and the other villagers who accept him. Mukkuru’s protective instincts are especially strong, and he does not hesitate to sow fear among enemies when Aruruu or Hakuowlo are threatened.
His key relationships center on Aruruu, his caretaker and closest ally, and Hakuowlo, whom he also comes to defend. The villagers, initially wary of him because of his mother’s reputation, gradually accept him as a valued member of the community. Mukkuru’s growth is less about a change in personality and more about the expansion of his role: he starts as a hidden cub smuggled into the village, matures rapidly into a powerful beast, and solidifies his place as Aruruu’s steadfast partner in both everyday life and combat. His development is primarily physical and relational rather than psychological, as his gentle cub‑like nature remains constant even as he becomes a fearsome fighter.
Notable abilities include his tremendous size and strength, which make him a devastating force on the battlefield. Most prominently, he possesses a hide that is impervious to nearly all weapons, a trait inherited from his mother Mutikapa. This near‑invulnerability extends even to the legendary Avu‑Kamuu, making him exceptionally difficult to harm. Coupled with his speed and ferocity in combat, these traits make him a valuable asset in battle and a dependable protector for those he loves.
