Description
Hal Lidner, whose real name is Halle Bullock, is a character introduced in the second half of the story. She is a highly capable operative recruited into the Special Provision for Kira, a covert organization led by Near with the goal of apprehending Kira. Before joining the SPK, Lidner served as an intelligence officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. Her decision to join the fight against Kira is not solely professional; it is deeply personal, driven by a desire for revenge after an acquaintance of hers was killed by Kira during the Yotsuba Group incident.

Standing 180 centimeters tall with a slender build, Lidner is a striking figure whose looks are noted as being fit for a magazine cover. Her personality is defined by a pragmatic and flexible approach to her mission. While she is a loyal member of the SPK and works faithfully toward its goals, she is not bound by rigid organizational loyalty. Lidner embodies the mindset of a skilled spy: detached, analytical, and focused solely on achieving results, even if that means operating outside of her designated role.

This pragmatic nature is most evident in her key relationships. Although she works directly under Near, Lidner independently establishes contact with his rival, Mello, and secretly shares information with him. Her reasoning is strategic, recognizing that both Near and Mello possess unique talents and pieces of the puzzle needed to defeat Kira. This unofficial collaboration makes her a silent but crucial bridge between the two opposing factions. Additionally, during the final phase of the investigation, Lidner is assigned to serve as a bodyguard and monitor for the newscaster Kiyomi Takada, who is suspected of being a Kira ally. In this role, she works to gain Takada's trust while covertly looking for evidence connecting her to the main suspect, Light Yagami.

Throughout the story, Lidner demonstrates a high level of competence, performing her duties with efficiency and without significant error. Beyond her intelligence-gathering skills, she is also physically capable, noted to be proficient in joint-lock techniques and unarmed combat, making her formidable in close-quarters situations. Her background and skill set allow her to operate effectively in high-stakes, ambiguous situations that require quick, critical thinking.

Her character development is subtle but significant, as she consistently makes autonomous decisions to further the investigation, even when those decisions involve risk or deception. In the end, Lidner survives the final confrontation between Near and Kira. Her name is written in a Death Note by the Kira follower Teru Mikami, but the attempt on her life fails because he was using a fake notebook at the time. Following Kira's defeat, Lidner continues her work, remaining allied with Near and his team. She is noted to hold a degree of sympathy for Mello, recognizing the critical and tragic role his actions played in ultimately cornering Kira. A version of the character also appears in the live-action television drama, where her background and role are significantly reimagined, including merging elements with the character Naomi Misora and acting as a secret agent for L planted within the Japanese police force.
