Description
Boota is a small creature known as a pig-mole and serves as the loyal pet and constant companion of Simon, one of the main pilots of Team Gurren. Rescued and raised by Simon from his time in the underground village of Giha, Boota is a fixture at his master's side throughout the entire story.
In terms of personality and behavior, Boota is initially presented as a simple animal providing comic relief, often seen resting in his favorite spots, which include Simon’s shoulder or the considerable comfort of Yoko’s chest. Despite his inability to speak, Boota displays a high level of intelligence, understanding human speech and complex situations. He is fiercely loyal and possesses a surprisingly selfless nature. A key early example of this is when he willingly sacrifices the flesh from his own rear end to provide emergency food for Simon and Kamina during a critical battle, demonstrating that even a small pet can contribute to the team’s survival.
Boota’s role in the story evolves significantly from that of a simple mascot. He acts as a quiet source of emotional support, especially for Simon during his deep depression following the death of Kamina. Later, he aids Yoko Littner in overcoming her grief and hesitation when she is forced to pilot the Gunmen Gurren. However, his most vital contribution occurs during the final conflict against the Anti-Spiral. When the Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren becomes trapped and drained of power, Boota reveals an immense, latent reserve of Spiral Power, the energy of evolution and willpower, stepping in to power the ship when Simon is exhausted. This act reveals that the small pig-mole is a far more significant being than he appears.
Throughout the narrative, Boota maintains several key relationships. His bond with Simon is the most central, enduring as a quiet, unbreakable companionship that lasts long after the final battle. He also shares a warm relationship with Yoko, who feels protected by his presence. An interesting dynamic occurs with Viral, a Beastman who lacks Spiral Power; Boota’s ability to generate it creates a surprising and effective partnership when they work together to power the Super Galaxy Dai-Gurren.
Boota undergoes a remarkable development, directly tied to his hidden abilities. While most pig-moles grow large with age, Boota remains perpetually small and youthful. It is theorized that he converts all of his biological growth energy into stored Spiral Power, which prevents him from aging physically. This accumulated power reaches its peak inside the Anti-Spiral’s Multiverse Labyrinth. By absorbing Spiral Power released by the Spiral King Lordgenome, Boota achieves a temporary evolution into a humanoid form. In this state, he gains the ability to speak, demonstrates heightened intelligence, and possesses enough power to directly confront and strike the physical manifestation of the Anti-Spiral. After escaping the labyrinth and defeating the enemy, Boota willingly reverts to his original pig-mole form.
Regarding his notable abilities, Boota’s primary power is the generation of massive amounts of Spiral Power, an ability unique among non-human creatures in the series. This power grants him several specific capabilities. He has demonstrated potent regeneration, able to regrow lost body parts almost immediately. He can project this energy outward to create powerful defensive forcefields capable of blocking attacks from godlike beings. He is also capable of absorbing the Spiral Power of others, which is the mechanism that triggered his transformation. In his evolved humanoid state, these abilities are magnified, granting him superhuman strength and the ability to physically interact with non-corporeal entities. After the final battle, having piloted the colossal Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Boota’s existence is elevated to a state where his body becomes a materialized thought, allowing him to reform his physical form as long as his consciousness remains intact. Following the defeat of the Anti-Spiral, Boota chooses to live out his days as Simon’s sole traveling companion, wandering the reclaimed earth together.
