TV-Series
Description
Mio Sakamoto, alias Samurai, is a prominent character from Fuso serving in the Fuso Imperial Navy. Holding the rank of Squadron Leader (equivalent to Major), she acts as sub-commander of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. A first-generation Strike Witch, her combat career began in early Neuroi conflicts, including the 1937 Fuso Sea Incident, earning her renown. She served as a test pilot for initial Striker Units based on Miyafuji theory, trained by Kitagou Fumika and Anna Ferrara – the latter's rigorous methods initially fostering resentment.
Deployed extensively in Europe before the Neuroi's full invasion, she collaborated with Dr. Miyafuji on Striker development and met key figures like Wing Commander Wilcke and Air Commodore Galland. Assigned to defend Libau with the Fuso Imperial Navy European Dispatch Fleet, she fought alongside allies Pilot Officer Takei and Nishizawa Yoshiko, forming the "Libau Triumvirate." An injury during Libau's evacuation forced her temporary return to Fuso before she rejoined active duty.
Mio possesses the perception-lineage magical ability called the Magic Eye, concealed by an eyepatch. It grants enhanced visual acuity to discern distant objects, spot Neuroi cores, and perceive beyond normal sight, though limited by obstacles, darkness, and field-of-view. Degrading magic power with age rendered her unable to generate robust combat shields. Compensating, she developed swordsmanship, forging the magic-infused Fuso sword Reppumaru during seclusion. She later acquired the Reppuzan technique, channeling magic energy into a slicing wave despite its incompatibility with her non-telekinetic lineage.
Her combat role emphasizes frontline leadership and protecting subordinates. She employs a Type 99-2 Model 2 Kai heavy machine gun and Reppumaru, later evolving tactics to evade or slice Neuroi beams directly due to her shield limitations. Her Striker Units include the Miyabishi Type 0 Carrier-based Fighter Legs Model 21, the Yamanishi Shiden Model 21, and the prototype Yamanishi Shiden Model 53, adapted for enhanced maneuverability.
Personality-wise, Mio exhibits a broadminded, cheerful demeanor with a candidly mannish disposition, adhering to "simplicity and fortitude." She balances hot-blooded impulsiveness with cool strategy in combat. Sentimental and faithful to obligations, she avoids showing vulnerability, concealing tears during struggles, though she openly expressed frustration to Wilcke over her depleting magic. Strict in training recruits, driven by fear of losing comrades, she dreams of mentoring a successor to entrust responsibilities. Her mentorship of Yoshika Miyafuji, daughter of her late colleague Dr. Miyafuji, is significant.
Outside combat, Mio enjoys hot springs, initiating the construction of a Fuso-style bathhouse at the 501st's base. She has no food preferences but lacks cooking skills due to early enlistment, humorously unable to shape onigiri non-spherically. She is knowledgeable in the Way of Tea without strict adherence to etiquette and harbors a fear of critters, fainting upon encountering a snake. Her familiar is the Doberman, manifesting as ears and a tail when using magic.
Her arc culminates in the final battle against the Neuroi Super-Hive in Venezia. Depleted magic prevents Reppuzan from damaging the Neuroi; instead, she channels residual magic into the battleship Yamato's dynamo, enabling its cannon to destroy the hive's shell. Absorbed by the Neuroi core, she is rescued by Yoshika Miyafuji's sacrifice. After eight years of service, Mio retires upon losing all magical power but remains in the military as an instructor, gaining respect for rearing excellent witches despite rigorous methods. Post-retirement, she reunites with comrade Kuroe Ayaka after seven years and refines her swordsmanship further.
Mio draws historical inspiration from Japanese aces Sakai Saburo and Tetsuzou Iwamoto, reflected in her callsign "Samurai," eyepatch, Magic Eye, and exceptional vision.
