Description
Nikka Edvardine Katajainen, universally nicknamed "Nipa," is a Suomus witch originating from Helsinki. Her witch powers manifested upon entering non-commissioned officer training school, where her careless nature immediately led to repeated, complete destructions of training striker units. This relentless pattern of equipment loss persisted through her military service, earning her monikers like "Unlucky Katajainen," "Unit Crasher," and "The Second Coming of Crasher O'Hare."

Graduating as a Flight Sergeant, she joined the elite 3rd Company of the Suomus Air Force's 24th Squadron. Serving alongside Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen and Hanna Wind, Nikka secured her first combat victory by downing a Neuroi. However, significant damage sustained during the engagement caused engine failure on her return flight, resulting in yet another crash. This event typified her aggressive combat doctrine: relentless attacks with minimal defensive shielding. Her constant destruction of striker units—whether by enemy action, crashes, mechanical breakdowns, or accidents—posed a severe logistical burden for the import-dependent Suomus military. Consequently, she faced temporary removal from frontline duties, reassigned to menial tasks like hangar cleaning and serving coffee.

Transferring to the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing in 1943, her notorious reputation for equipment damage saw her grouped with Waltrud Krupinski and Kanno Naoe under the collective nickname "Break Witches." A winter 1944 deployment to the Joroinen Observatory allowed a brief reunion with Eila and an introduction to Sanya V. Litvyak.

Nikka presents a boyish appearance and tomboyish demeanor, often exhibiting unladylike manners. Her personality is straightforward and exacting, viewing situations in stark terms of right or wrong. While not unintelligent, she is guileless and easily distracted, making her a frequent target of pranks by peers like Eila. Though socially adept, she struggles to read social atmospheres, sometimes leading superiors to perceive a poor attitude. A deep commitment to protecting her homeland drives her efforts, though her blunt approach occasionally undermines this goal.

Her core magical ability is hyper-regeneration. This synergizes with her snow weasel familiar's healing magic, enabling rapid recovery from injuries. The power circulates magic through her body during flight, allowing survival in crashes that would typically prove fatal. This resilience may fuel her perceived carelessness in combat and piloting.

Throughout her service, Nikka operated several striker units:
* A Messerscharf Bf109G-6 (No. MT-476), repeatedly repaired after crashes until magic engine wear rendered it unusable.
* A Messerscharf Bf109K-4, unofficially acquired from Karlsland supplies by Waltrud Krupinski after the G-6's destruction. It retained Suomus markings but lacked an official machine number, having been declared lost.

Interpersonal relationships significantly shaped her development. Her friendship with Eila Juutilainen began in the 24th Squadron. Within the 502nd, her dynamic with mechanic and combat commander Aleksandra I. Pokryshkin evolved from friction over Nikka's equipment destruction to mutual respect; Aleksandra's meticulousness helped curb Nikka's carelessness. She also formed a close bond with the unit's new recruit, Hikari Karibuchi, offering consistent support—like secretly preparing Saturnalia festivities when Hikari fell ill—and immediate acceptance as a comrade.

Beyond combat, Nikka possesses skill in mushroom foraging, including identifying poisonous varieties, and engages in Finnish cultural practices like winter ice swimming followed by sauna sessions.

The character draws inspiration from the Finnish flying ace Nils "Nipa" Katajainen, known similarly for frequent non-fatal crashes during World War II.
