TV-Series
Description
Frank Latoine is a French piano student who becomes part of the central cast during the Paris arc of the series. He resides in the same student-friendly apartment complex in Paris as the protagonists Shinichi Chiaki and Megumi Noda, known as Nodame. Physically, Frank is depicted as a young adult with blonde or yellow hair and blue eyes.
Frank's most defining characteristic is his passionate identity as an otaku, a deep enthusiast of Japanese anime culture. His room is decorated with anime figurines, and he goes so far as to program his recorder to capture new episodes of his favorite shows immediately. He is particularly fond of the series Shakugan no Shana and a fictional magical girl anime named Puri Gorota, which also happens to be Nodame's favorite. He frequently wears clothing adorned with anime characters, a habit that others often find irritating and that tends to hinder his social interactions, especially with women.
Frank first meets Nodame during their entrance examinations for the Paris Conservatory, where they bond over shared snacks and a mutual appreciation for anime. Upon their reunion at the apartment complex, Frank develops a slight romantic interest in Nodame, interpreting their meeting again as fate. In an attempt to impress her, he cleans his room and invites her for tea. However, his feelings quickly diminish after he witnesses the sheer intensity of her anime obsession. Upon hearing Nodame recite entire episodes of Puri Gorota from memory in French, Frank concludes that her enthusiasm far surpasses his own, and he also takes note of her strong existing connection with Chiaki.
Musically, Frank is a dedicated pianist. He previously attended the same school as the character Yunlong before making the decision to transfer to the prestigious Paris Conservatory, hoping to study under the admired Professor Charles Auclair. This decision is made despite the fact that students cannot always choose their instructors. By the conclusion of the series, Frank's musical abilities show significant growth. This development earns him the opportunity to perform chamber music with the accomplished pianist Rui Son, a moment that hints at a possible future romantic attraction between the two musicians.
Within the apartment complex, Frank maintains a regular, banter-filled relationship with the Russian pianist Tanya, which often consists of mutual complaints and cultural observations. He is also shown to be technically competent, assisting other residents with tasks like computer setup, though not always willingly. His role in the story primarily serves as comic relief and as a fellow enthusiast who reflects and amplifies Nodame's own quirkiness, while also demonstrating the growth of a secondary student navigating the competitive world of classical music in Paris.
