Though prone to sneaking out nightly during training for mischief with comrades, she graduated second lieutenant with top marks.

Assigned to the 6th Flying Corps of the 52nd Fighter Wing (6./JG52), she forged a legendary trio with Gertrud Barkhorn and Erica Hartmann, serving as Hartmann’s lead wingman. Their combined prowess dominated battlefields until her 1944 transfer to the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, where her combat brilliance persisted.
