Description
Archer is the Servant of Rin Tohsaka in the Fifth Holy Grail War, a conflict that serves as the backdrop for his appearance in Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. His true identity is that of a Counter Guardian named EMIYA, which is revealed to be a possible future version of the young mage Shirou Emiya. Unlike most Heroic Spirits who are legendary figures from the distant past, Archer is a unique case: a hero from a future timeline who made a contract with the World in his lifetime. He bargained for the power to perform miracles and save people, but after his death, he was not enshrined as a proper hero. Instead, he was forced to serve as a Counter Guardian, an entity deployed to eliminate threats to humanity, a task that often required him to kill indiscriminately, including many innocent people, to prevent a greater catastrophe. This cruel irony, where his dream of being a savior led to a reality of endless slaughter, is the source of his profound inner turmoil.

Archer’s personality is defined by a deep-seated cynicism and bitterness that he masks with a calm, sarcastic, and pragmatic demeanor. He is an efficient and realistic individual, capable of making cold-blooded decisions that his younger self would find abhorrent. Despite his hardened exterior, he possesses a hidden devotion and a childish stubbornness that makes him difficult to truly hate. He is not a liar, but he is a master of keeping secrets, and his sarcasm often serves as a veiled form of advice. His primary motivation throughout the Unlimited Blade Works route is to kill his past self, Shirou Emiya. He believes that by creating a temporal paradox, he can erase his own existence as a Counter Guardian, thus freeing himself from the endless cycle of killing he has been forced into. He views Shirou’s unwavering ideal of becoming an ally of justice, of wanting to save everyone, as a naive and delusional curse that will only lead to tragedy and regret, a path he himself has already walked to its bitter end.

In the story, Archer initially acts as a loyal, if aloof, Servant to Rin. He fights alongside her and her unexpected allies, Shirou and Saber, using his tactical genius to hold his own against far more powerful foes. However, his true agenda becomes clear when he betrays Rin, willingly allowing himself to be taken by the enemy Servant Caster to gain his freedom from Rin’s command spells. This act repositions him as a major antagonist. His ultimate goal is a one-on-one confrontation with Shirou in a desolate landscape created by his Reality Marble, where he seeks to crush Shirou’s spirit and kill him, thereby ending his own cursed existence. His role is therefore a tragic mirror, forcing Shirou to confront the potential consequences of his own ideals.

Key relationships drive the narrative. His connection with Rin Tohsaka is complex; she is his Master, and while he respects her abilities and finds her amusing, his mission to kill Shirou takes precedence over his duties to her. Their partnership is tested severely when he betrays her, yet his final actions in the route suggest a lingering respect and perhaps even a desire for her to succeed where he failed. The central relationship, however, is with Shirou Emiya. As an older, disillusioned version of Shirou, Archer shares not only his memories but also his origin and magical affinity. Their conflict is not merely physical but ideological, a debate about the validity of saving others when it inevitably leads to the sacrifice of the self. While Archer aims to destroy Shirou, the encounter forces him to re-examine his own past and the ideals he abandoned.

Over the course of Unlimited Blade Works, Archer undergoes significant development. His absolute hatred for his younger self softens as he witnesses Shirou’s unwavering determination to pursue his ideals, even when faced with the horrific truth of where they lead. In their final battle, Archer, having the upper hand, ultimately chooses not to deliver the killing blow. He concedes that while the ideal may be impossible, the pursuit of it is not without value. He then fakes his death and operates from the shadows, saving Rin and providing the decisive assistance that allows Shirou to defeat the main antagonist, Gilgamesh. In his final moments, he disappears with a genuine smile, content that Rin might be able to guide Shirou away from his own tragic fate.

Archer’s notable abilities are formidable despite his low-tier statistical parameters as a Servant. His primary skill is his unique magecraft, Unlimited Blade Works. This is a Reality Marble, a forbidden spell that manifests his inner world as a barren wasteland littered with countless swords, gears, and flames. Within this space, he can instantly manifest and control any bladed weapon he has ever seen, including legendary Noble Phantasms, storing thousands within his reality. He couples this with masterful Projection Magecraft, allowing him to duplicate weapons with near-perfect accuracy, including the skills and strength of their original owners. He uses this ability to copy the twin swords Kanshou and Bakuya, his favored weapons for close combat, and to create powerful arrows like Caladbolg II, which he can fire with his bow. By overloading a projected Noble Phantasm, he can use it as a Broken Phantasm, a suicide weapon that explodes with immense destructive force.

To support this arsenal, Archer possesses high-level tactical skills. His Eye of the Mind (True) is a keen analytical ability gained through countless battles, allowing him to calmly assess a situation and find a way to victory even when the odds are one percent. His Clairvoyance grants him superhuman visual perception, enabling him to snipe targets from over four kilometers away with perfect accuracy. He is also a highly capable close-quarters combatant, able to hold his own against melee specialists like Lancer and Saber through unorthodox tactics and relentless adaptability, proving that a Servant without a famous name can still be one of the most dangerous in the war.
