Description
The Assassin class servant summoned in the Fifth Holy Grail War is a highly unconventional figure, known under the guise of the legendary Japanese swordsman Sasaki Kojirō. He is not a true Heroic Spirit in the normal sense but rather a wraith, a nameless and anonymous master swordsman whose existence and skills fit the legendary template of Sasaki Kojirō. Because of this, he was summoned into the Assassin class, though he is a false Assassin, as the true title belongs to one of the Hassan-i-Sabbah. His summoning was orchestrated by the servant Caster, who exploited a loophole in the rules of the Holy Grail War. Using the large gate of the Ryūdōji Temple as a catalyst, she called him forth to serve as her guardian. This irregular summoning binds him to the temple gate, making him unable to stray far from it, effectively forcing him into the role of a permanent gatekeeper.

In appearance, Assassin cuts a striking and elegant figure. He is tall and lean, with long, deep blue hair tied into a high ponytail with a light purple ribbon. He wears a traditional combination of a dark purple sleeveless jacket over a lighter purple kimono, with matching wrist guards. He is often seen with a relaxed posture, leaning against the temple gate with his arms crossed and a small twig held loosely in his mouth. His most prominent physical feature is his sword, the Monohoshi Zao, an exceptionally long nodachi blade measuring over one and a half meters, which he carries casually on his back.

His personality stands in stark contrast to the underhanded nature expected of an Assassin. He is a quiet, contemplative, and remarkably honorable individual. He scorns stealth and surprise attacks, preferring instead to announce his presence and engage in fair, face-to-face combat. He possesses a deep appreciation for the aesthetic, finding joy in the simple beauty of flowers, birds, wind, and the moon, which often leads him to make poetic observations. Despite his calm and composed demeanor, he can be surprisingly sardonic and sharp-tongued, a trait he directs most frequently at his master, Caster, whom he affectionately insults by calling a vixen. He maintains a stoic and unshakable calm, even when gravely wounded, which reflects his somewhat detached view of life and death, seeing them as natural parts of a warrior’s existence.

His motivations are refreshingly simple within the conflict of the Holy Grail War. He has no desire for the Grail itself, as its power would mean nothing to a nameless wraith with no wish to actualize. He also holds little loyalty to Caster, serving her only because the binding of his summoning leaves him no choice. His sole driving purpose is to seek out and cross blades with worthy opponents. He lives for the thrill of a duel, hoping to test his supreme swordsmanship against other servants. He is a warrior who has devoted his entire existence to the pursuit of the blade, and the Holy Grail War is merely an arena where he can finally find the challenge he craves.

In the narrative of Unlimited Blade Works, Assassin functions as a guardian of the Ryūdōji Temple, which Caster has claimed as her stronghold. He intercepts several servants who attempt to storm the temple. His most significant role comes in his duels with the Saber-class servant, Artoria Pendragon. Their battles are presented as pure swordplay contests, where they match their skills as masters of the blade. Despite Saber’s immense power and skill, she is pressed by Assassin’s unorthodox and flawless technique, acknowledging him as a truly peerless swordsman. He also encounters Archer, whom he allows to pass through the gate, motivated more by his personal dislike for Caster than any allegiance. He even permits Saber and her master, Shirou Emiya, to leave unharmed after a fight, out of respect for their resolve and honor. His story arc concludes with one final, definitive duel against Saber, where he is ultimately defeated, a death he accepts with quiet dignity as his swordsman's wish fulfilled.

His key relationships are defined by his paradoxical existence. With Caster, his relationship is one of mutual disdain held together by necessity. He mocks her openly, and she punishes him with magical torments, yet he remains bound to protect her gate. His most important relationship is with his rival, Saber. He holds her in the highest regard as a warrior, and their clashes are marked by mutual respect and a shared love of swordsmanship. In their final battle, they part as true rivals, each having given the other the fight they desired.

While Assassin does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, there is a sense of quiet fulfillment in his role. Initially appearing as a mere obstacle, his repeated interactions, especially with Saber, reveal his depth as a true artist of the sword. His development is not about changing who he is, but about finally achieving his purpose. He is granted the opportunity to fully express his life’s work in combat against a worthy foe, finding satisfaction and completion in a noble defeat rather than a bitter victory.

His most notable ability is his supreme mastery of swordsmanship, honed to a degree that borders on the supernatural. Because he is not a true Heroic Spirit, he possesses no noble phantasm in the traditional sense. Instead, his technique, the secret sword Tsubame Gaeshi, has reached the same level of power as a noble phantasm through pure skill alone. This technique is a multi-dimensional refraction phenomenon that allows him to strike the same target from three different directions simultaneously, effectively creating an unavoidable attack. Beyond this, his skills include a form of Presence Concealment that is not used for stealthy murder but is a spiritual refinement of a swordsman who becomes one with their surroundings. He also possesses a high rank in Mind's Eye, a dangerous intuition that allows him to calmly analyze and counter an opponent's abilities after only a few exchanges. His stats are unusual for an Assassin, with an exceptional rank in agility that allows him to wield his impossibly long sword with blinding speed.
