Description
Naoe Kanno, nicknamed Nao, hails from Fuso and serves as a witch within the Fuso Imperial Navy's 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, forming a significant partnership with Karibuchi Hikari.
Born to strict parents, Kanno exhibited an obedient and literary childhood, maintaining a diary of Tanka and poetry. She admired Gallian literature, specialized in the Gallian language at the naval academy, and abstained from alcohol entirely. Her early training involved frequent bullying by peers and instructors. During this period, she developed a habit of closing in on targets to near collision, repeatedly damaging her Striker Unit. This tendency earned her the nickname "Destroyer" while refining her extreme close-range evasion tactics.
Commissioned as a Pilot Officer, Kanno deployed with the European Dispatch Fleet for Operation Barbarossa. She provided inland support during the Petersburg Invasion Operation and later defended the city. Her service record includes administrative transfers to the 201st Flying Corps and the 343rd Flying Corps before joining the newly formed 502nd Joint Fighter Wing amid increased international witch cooperation.
Kanno exhibits a consciously adopted "Napoleonic" personality—bold and daring in combat despite her small stature—a trait embraced after awakening her witch abilities. She motivated herself with the belief that fighting Neuroi demands a "ferocious personality," leading to brashness and occasional social belligerence. While initially hindering teamwork, Flight Lieutenant Pokryshkin helped temper this attitude due to her resemblance to Kanno's cherished elder sister.
Her combat philosophy emphasizes relentless aggression: "if you run out of bullets use a blade, and if the blade breaks use a body blow." She prioritizes engaging large Neuroi targets, believing their destruction offers greater worth. Her signature tactic involves nose-diving from directly above an enemy and firing during close passage.
Kanno initially rejected Hikari Karibuchi’s assignment to the 502nd, viewing her as an inadequate replacement for her original partner, Takami. Witnessing Hikari’s determination and combat intellect gradually shifted Kanno’s perspective, leading to acceptance and the formation of a close bond, with Kanno formally acknowledging Hikari as her partner.
Kanno’s inherent magic is the Compression-formula Super Hardness Defensive Magic Circle, termed the Super Hard Shield. This ability concentrates a defensive shield to dozens of centimeters in diameter, vastly increasing its durability. She extends this magic to her fists for close combat, executing the Tsurugi Issen ("Sword Flash") technique.
Her Striker Units include the frequently destroyed, unmarked Miyabishi Type 0 Carrier-based Fighter Legs Model 22 Kou, and later the Yamanishi Shiden Model 21 (No. 502-15), displaying victory markings for two large and five small Neuroi.
Kanno’s familiar is a bulldog, reflecting her historical inspiration: Imperial Japanese Navy ace Kanno Naoshi, nicknamed "Bulldog," "Destroyer," and "Yellow Fighter." Like her namesake, who downed a B-24 via tailstrike, Kanno shares traits of aggression and mechanical destruction. She bears a scar on her left cheek, typically concealed with a patch.
In spin-off media like *World Witches: Take Off!*, Kanno participates in activities such as winter swimming with unit members Nikka and Hikari, showcasing persistence despite initial reluctance. Her interactions highlight her gradual softening toward Hikari, including subtle acknowledgments of their partnership.
Kanno appears across multiple *World Witches* installments, including the *Brave Witches* anime, light novels, manga adaptations like *Brave Witches: 502nd Joint Fighter Wing*, and video games such as *Brave Witches VR: Operation Baba-Yaga* and *World Witches United Front*.
